Aloha all!
I was wondering if any of you going to see lava very often and spend very long time at the area .I am thinking to try security job over there but scared if it is not good for my health.I am not sick or anything like that but not sure about inhaling staff.
I guess if the guards there are not wearing space suits it could be OK.
But people who worked with asbestos didn't become sick right away.
Any doctors here ?

If you have any asthma type illnesses I wouldn't even get close. Otherwise they monitor the air at the end of the road and shut it down when not safe. I suppose that could be a good part time job but I wouldn't count on it for main scource of income.

Anyone with respiratory or cardiac problems and pregnant women are advised to avoid active volcanic areas, anywhere, anytime.

the fact is... when lava enters the ocean the gases created are so bad OSHA refused to allow the national park to require staff to work full shifts when the viewing was on the national park side.

burning anything.. ie inhaling the gases and particulate matter can be way bad.. burning asphalt is horrible. I spent 25 yrs working with/around/on.. blah the lava.. my health problems (as I grow older) are lung oriented. but docs arent willing to draw straight lines to all that exposure and the problems I have now.. though I can..

that said.. I am sure others would say the gov wouldnt let you expose yourself to too much.. but then they let people live in pahala and to me thats insane!

That was what I thought too, dakine that the government wouldn't let you... And people live right by there in Seaview .It's like what -3 miles or less from the lava viewing?
But my concern was coming kinda from my little experience working for a small security/janitorial company like the one by lava.Hurting for business the company agreed on all kinds of staff for the guards
to do like plunging toilets in hotels after hours. It was in the post orders!
Hey,I ain't scared of any **** if it's not glowing in the dark !

My experience down at the lava viewing and living in Seaview is that most of the time the trade winds push the vog away from the viewing area and away from Seaview. That is why this part of Puna historically has the cleanest air in the entire state. When the Kona winds blow, the viewing area is shut down. You can be standing right next to the plume but if the wind is blowing strongly and consistently the other way, you will not have a problem.

Seaview is more like 6 miles. I wouldn't have any health reservations about working security down at the lava flow.

I am not a troll. The job offer was posted on Craigslist.Anyone who is looking for any job recently most likely saw it.
Obie, you can call Janguard security and ask them if they posted their add on Craigslist about a month ago.It is my first post but it doesn't make me a troll.

You don't sound like a troll, laniA. I think your concerns are perfectly intelligent. The prevailing wind will be your friend though, as long as they close the area whenever the wind shifts, you will either not be picking up the fumes or you will be gone.

Would I work around the volcanic fumes, if they were significant? No way. Any kind of combustion (like da kine says) is murder on my lungs.

Thank you,Kathy. While I was dragging my feet with the application the job is probably long gone.I kinda think that's what I wish for that I don't have to deal with the nagging doubts.

That makes sense. If it were the job you really wanted, you would have gotten that app in fast. Of course in times like these, one is just looking for a job, not the dream job, but who doesn't hope for the work that will be more than just a paycheck, and at the least not a health-compromising job.

When the County ran the viewing area, all the employees carried respirators, gloves and protective clothing. They would close the site at the first sign of bad air. A lot of visitors are willing to risk the danger for a one time glimpse of lava, but the workers have to be concerned about long term exposure.

Also, when the employees put on the protective gear and ask visitors to leave it makes a much more compelling statement.
