Anyone have any information on Ashley, running against Eileen O’Hara in district 4. Her website is pretty vague as to her agenda and she doesn’t seem to have much experience besides having 2 kids to raise. She seems to have a lot of money for signs. Maybe a pushback on O’Hara’s rooster bill!

To Bigseaal and all,
Please review this video. It is eye-opening. The connection to Ashley W, who is running for County Council District 4, is that she is/was the SPOKESWOMAN for Hu Honua, the dirty energy company talked about by Patriot, Koohan Paik. Ashley is backed by big corporations who are violating the environmental standards. This is MORE than a retaliation of the Rooster bill. This is a take-over by a pretty face. Also, look up her criminal record. Such a pretty face and was charged with assault against her Filipino mother. I think her family has disowned her. She was sent from Oahu and has been her for two years. What can she really know about Puna.

Wow. Don't know where to begin. I find Koohan Paik's arguments to be laughable and pathetically misinformed. She rants about greenhouse gasses but if you re-grow the trees then a wood-burning plant is carbon neutral. Does she just not understand this? She says we could build a plant that doesn't emit greenhouse gasses. Well maybe. The tried and true method is nuclear. Would she prefer that? There are alternatives of course like OTEC but we have had the world's foremost research effort here in Kona for 30 years and still no major OTEC plant. There's wind and solar of course and they are becoming more significant. However most people (KP in particular) have no grasp of how deeply we are hooked on power and how hard it is to replace fossil fuels. We are moving in the right direction and one way or another we will get there. It might be ugly when the lights start going off before we have the fairy-power plants operational but one way or another it has to happen. Meanwhile Ms Paik's lifestyle is completely dependant on HELL-Co's oil-fueled electricity. Not only does she need them to serve as a bogeyman but she needs them to keep her refrigerator running or at the very least to keep the traffic lights on and gas in her car so she can get to whatever event this rant was recorded at.

This Ashley character, Ms Paik doesn't like her? Hmmm..

We already have one; it's called "PGV". We just can't have any more, because geothermal is desecration of sacred land (but burning things that desecrate the air we breathe is totally okay).

Ashley is backed by big corporations

Not as far as I know. (We have big corporations bothering to influence local elections?)

She was sent from Oahu and has been her for two years.

She bought her house two years ago, lived in Hilo before that. Went to school here.

This will certainly be a race worth watching. Ohara's rooster bill has now solidly alienated what may or may not be a significant block of voters. Will all those angry cock fighters actually vote? I guess we'll see. What concerns me about Ohara is that she voted for significant tax increases last year without first insisting that the mayor present specific plans for cutting expenses and controlling the county payroll. When asked why this was not demanded, Ohara replied, "It's not the council's job to do the budget." Well, the council has to approve it, and that gives them a lot of clout that was not used in this case. Now Harry is back demanding more GET money. Imagine that!

I know next to nothing about Ashley, but I do know that the wood burning power plant is a source of renewable energy with much less negative impact than burning bunker oil. And yes, as MarkP notes, Koohan Paik does come across as over the top. As for the domestic assault charges, was she convicted? People make charges all the time that don't fly in court. Anyone can claim someone did something, but proving it is another matter. And when it comes to domestics, the sky's the limit. Sounds like Ohara's supporters have resorted to early mudslinging rather than issues based discussion.

Does Amazon Prime ship popcorn to Hawaii? I may need a big box.

While there is a sizable, VOCAL, contingent of pro rooster voters, I would think the NO rooster vote would be just as large, if not larger. During an election it also won't make a difference how loud the pro rooster supporters are. They can't intimidate voters in the same way as they did council members when they cornered them in chambers at a recent meeting. They can't roll boulders across the roads to polling stations, unless they also want to block their own votes.

I hope roosters do not become the defining issue of our next election, although sadly, there's a good chance it could overshadow all of the other problems in our district that are far more important, long term and short term.

@HOTPE: I agree that the anti-rooster voters probably outnumber the cock fighters and their supporters, but I can see this possibly becoming a "locals vs. transplants" issue. In that case, it becomes something other than the narrow point that started it. Having said that, I also hope it isn't the defining issue.

Ashley was born and raised here. IMO she identifies more with Hilo than Puna even tho' she spent summers in Puna as a kid. She was head of the Young Democrats, the Big Island branch being a non-functioning caucus. She cares more about status than being a public servant and has been escorted to HPP meetings by Greggor Ilagan's father who is a right-wing Republican, from what I'm told.

She was arrested and charged with abuse of a family or household member in 2007 but in 2008 copped a DAC plea for assaulting her mother Marieta Duldulao and has since cleared her record. I was amazed in reading the court record as I've found the courts here to be very sensitive and supportive of families caught up in criminal cases .

I don't think Ashley gives a flying fig about representing Puna. I think she's counting on her Filipina connections to get the lower Puna council seat which she sees has a more vulnerable incumbent than Hilo (and she has both Hilo and Kea'au addresses).

Re: the cockfighting issue: Councilwoman Ohara's proposed bill, drawn up at the request of a group of constituents and working with the County Planning Dept. on possible legislation, did not even get a 2nd from her fellow Council reps. And it's not just a local vs. transplant issue. Ohara's legislative aide is local and can't sleep because a rooster farm has moved in next door to her home in Ainaloa (or Orchidland, I forget which).

So as far as the Council is concerned, cock farms and farmers are not an issue. As we all know, there are already laws on the books to address the issues surrounding cockfighting but they're not enforced. It's been a hands-off issue since I arrived here in 1970.

But regarding Ashley Kierkiewicz's running for County Council to represent lower Puna. I wish she'd just go get a job as a high fashion model...she'd be good at that!

Frankie, thanks for the background on Ashley, your insight and opinion. I did a quick search on Google for more info on her. The results are surprisingly limited, especially for someone from the social media generation, and mostly focused on her run for council. But from what I could find it looks like you have a point that in Puna, to reconfigure Brother Noland:

She's a high fashion girl in a coconut world.

Ohara's legislative aide is local and can't sleep because a rooster farm has moved in next door to her home

Then OHara's legislative aide shouildn't have bought a home on ag-zoned land.

Ohara's proposed bill, drawn up at the request of a group of constituents

If her "constituents" are less than "the entire County", then failure of her proposal is the correct outcome.

There's really no need for County to involve itself in issues that belong in a subdivision's CC&Rs.

I don't think Ashley gives a flying fig about representing Puna.

County doesn't care about Puna either, so it's a perfect match!

While background information is something to be seriously considered, I would like to see a more issues based campaign. Ashley's website, at least at this early stage, seems to be totally lacking in stands on issues facing Puna. I want to know what she proposes to do about subdivision roads, law enforcement, medical resources, and budget/taxes. Based on her record so far, I have some idea about Ohara's positions on these issues, and the record is mixed in my opinion. I'd like to see clear policy statements from both these candidates and any others who emerge.

I have to agree Chunkster. Even though she has an instagram page for her campaign, it's mostly pictures of people in t-shirts and campaign signs. As you noted, we need to hear more about her views on subdivision roads, law enforcement, medical resources, and budget/taxes.

Let's hope her website will soon grow and expand to include those views, as well as other concerns of residents living in Puna.

Agree with Frankie Stapleton.
Ashley Kierkiewicz is pretty lipstick for the corrupt old boy regime.
She would be a prettier but still unconcerned Puna rep in the mold of
Greggor Ilagan, Fred Blas, Emily Naeole or Al Smith in the recent past.
