With so many farms lost in lower Puna, there are many people looking for work. Hawaii County Dept R&D has a list of workers:

If you are looking for agricultural workers, please send job descriptions and qualifications to:

Glenn Sako
Hawaii County Department of Research & Development
email : Glenn.Sako@hawaiicounty.gov

Glenn has offered to make these opportunities available for viewing.

I alternate between thinking of the planet as home — dear and familiar stone hearth and garden — and as a hard land of exile in which we are all sojourners. Today I favor the latter view. The word “sojourner”... invokes a nomadic people’s sense of vagrancy, a praying people’s knowledge of estrangement, a thinking people’s intuition of sharp loss: “For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.” - Annie Dillard

A lot of these displaced farm workers are Filipino. Some of the best workers on the planet.

Another option is to make the worker provide their GET tax number and hire them as an independent contractor. The farm reports the contractor's fees paid to the state via 1099 or whatever and it's the worker's responsibility to pay the GET on the money they were paid and also provide their own insurance. One can get a farm "General Liability" policy for about $500/year in case the worker injures themselves and it turns out (shock!) that they didn't have insurance, and sues the farm.

It's not much different than when you hire somebody to come eradicate LFA. They aren't employees, they are a business providing a service.

I wish everyone success in finding a position during all the upheaval. Hopefully soon some sense of order will establish itself. Aloha everyone.
