We had several big discussions about this. As I said in the previous thread:

http://www.punaweb.org/Forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=24604

The people who love using the stuff and defend it and evil Mosanto vehemently, and there are some here on PunaWeb, (won't name names) they can pretend to turn a blind eye to the facts, but there are thousands of people suffering from cancerous diseases brought on by continuous use of the product.

Anyway the court cases are starting the judges are listening.
Believe it or not.

Christine Sheppard from Hawaii who used it continuously on her Hawaii coffee farm is one of those from this next clip who got non-hodgkins lymphoma because of its use and Monsanto's lies claiming it's safe.

Monsanto = lies, lies, lies. Let the truth be revealed.

I'm sure those people were never exposed to any other chemicals.

Not saying Roundup is necessrily safe; more likely, we will never know for sure, because money.

Believe Monsanto may now be owned by Bayer AG(De).
Bayer has or will kill the Monsanto name.
Don't know all the legal ramifications.
Anyone add anything?

Very sound and logical point Kalakoa and that will probably be one of the main arguments for the Monsanto layers.

I guess if the judge sees a correlation between the specific types of diseases the plaintiffs are getting, that and these individual's amount of exposure (through work or whatever) to the "dangerous" chemicals in roundup. Not just the glycophosphates.

Must be fun to have a bogeyman to blame things on.

I did not stay in school long enough to know if glysophosphates are killing us or not. I am happy to see Monsanto go as I abhorred their business practices. Not sure that anything changes with Bayer at the helm because money (Mahalo KK).

Good one Paul, I agree! Monsanto is just like a bogey man. Rich, evil, scary, lurking in the dark. We are in full agreement. I guess now it's Bayer though.

(Don't read from here to the end of this post unless you're PaulW)

I'm sure they won't put people in harms way to release new chemicals and engineered non-edible foods and exploitation of poor third wold countries that Bayer/ Monsanto have virtually bought through dirty deals, money loop holes and now own and etc etc.

“Heroin, Nazis, and Agent Orange: Inside the $66 Billion Merger of the Year.

These companies used to sell heroin and Agent Orange. Now, they want to form the world’s largest supplier of seeds and pesticides.

Two giants of the farming and chemical industries agreed to merge Wednesday in a $66 billion deal: the U.S.’s Monsanto and Germany’s Bayer, the original maker of aspirin. It’s the year’s biggest deal and will create the world’s largest supplier of seeds and farm chemicals, with $26 billion in combined annual revenue from agriculture. If the merger goes through, it will combine two companies with a long and storied history that shaped what we eat, the drugs we take and how we grow our food.”

“Let the truth be revealed”
Amen to that, even if some don’t like the truth.
Let’s check back on this thread in a year’s time.

ElysianWort, if it turns out roundup is a carcinogen, what will we use in its place? How will we keep weeds or bugs from overtaking crops? Is there a better technology out there, or will we be condemning the third world to starvation?

Better question: once nature evolves roundup-resistance, what will we use instead?

Bonus round: will nature evolve faster than the lawsuits are settled?

An old friend who moved off island is a micro-biology professor, very organic eating and living type guy. He claimed roundup was pretty harmless and couldn't understand the hype. So unless the formula has changed since then, a little over 15 yrs ago, I'm still using it.

what will we use in its place?

And after Roundup kills all the yard workers who use it almost daily on their yard maintenance jobs, in applications around trees, driveway edges, and large areas of cleared pahoehoe, what will we do then?

I alternate between thinking of the planet as home — dear and familiar stone hearth and garden — and as a hard land of exile in which we are all sojourners. Today I favor the latter view. The word “sojourner”... invokes a nomadic people’s sense of vagrancy, a praying people’s knowledge of estrangement, a thinking people’s intuition of sharp loss: “For we are strangers before thee, and sojourners, as were all our fathers: our days on the earth are as a shadow, and there is none abiding.” - Annie Dillard

Probably go back to more dangerous stuff that kills everything it touches.

Nothing in it's place. Go back to the Pioneer style farming where you fed your family and anyone around in the neighborhood that wanted to trade farm produce for other goods and services.

It's such a backwards way of thinking, (in my opinion) expecting a chemical made in a lab far away will solve your short term problems in the garden. You have bugs or other gardening issues to get rid of? There's a ton of simple remedies that can be created in your kitchen with items you are okay eating. You have weeds? Pull them up. You have trees you don't want? Cut them down or burn it out. People got lazy. It's almost as if we started cheating and taking short cuts with chemicals and they turn out to bite back in the long run. I guess it enables some of us that aren't good at farming to be okay at it. Some things we already had right and we took too far with technology.
