It's all about head and flow. Water off your roof has neither head nor flow to speak of.

Head 48ft in a 4 inch pipe - squeezed thru a 1/2 inch CPVC pipe n small Pelton wheel hydro wheel.
Charges the smallest of appliances .
Our son in law designed it .
It is a home made device .
Flash lights ( LED ) and cell phones mostly .
You all can disagree to agree all you wish to and it works for us.
Our son in law is ex military and tinkering is his pride n joy now that he is retired submariner .

"Head 48ft in a 4 inch pipe "

Cool, I will drop by tomorrow. Since you stated you had a system that runs off of the water coming down your downspouts, your house should be easy to spot, it has to be over at least 55 ft high !!

See ya !!!

Great Home Power article on micro-hydro ! Since parts of the Big Island regularly get 3 to 4 times the rainfall that Seattle (the example in the article) does, I think it is totally reasonable that Mimosa could get some usable energy from a downspout turbine.

Nowhere did Mim. state that their entire off-grid system was powered by downspouts. Reading comprehension much ???

So if you put a mini hydro inline with your pump and ran the pump off the mini hydro, you could get perpetual motion?

On top of the 50ft tower is a 1000 gallon - stainless steel water tank - and the 4 inch pipe is for head and gravity feed water.
After dropping the required head - the half inch goes into much smaller pipes that turn the mini turbines made of brass .
Perpetual motion yes with some loss of H2O that is stored in 25K water tanks above and below ground.
Plenty recycle parts on this island for the home tinkerer .
Currently he is making a methane digest er instead of propane.Inner tubes to store and the gasses along with smaller orifices for the appliances as needed.

You should try burning unicorn farts, it would be a lot easier and cheaper.

I get 15 feet of rain per year, about 1/2" per day. I have considered whether I could get a usable amount of energy by building a 65' tower (with a sizeable roof to catch the water) and running a small hydro system. I have not crunched any numbers but my gut tells me that I would come out way ahead if I spent the same money on more solar panels.

Absent access to free moving water (a stream) I think the only advantage into capturing hydro in this way would be that it can happen at night when solar output is zero. This is the inherent problem with wind power in Puna as well, the winds tend to be during the day when solar is already a better option.

ETA: I guess what I meant is that the problem (expense) isn't harvesting energy, it's storing it. Of course we could require less storage if there was a way to generate some power at night, but the options aren't here yet.
