Mahalo Kirt , for letting us in on what's going on for 130... via Bryson's bypass.
Have friends down there and hate to keep asking if they are o.k.
Tommy & Anne are great in a movie......but we have real life guys here in Puna that I much prefer to count on!

"So where does the chain of craters exit go through the closed park?"

I just got off the phone with a representative from B. Schatz's office. I expressed that concern, among others, as adequately as I could. Bring in the Corps of Engineers? And, keep a couple of geri cans handy.

Yesterday evening the DOT guy told me that there is a third way out of Kalapana etc. According to him, it's rough but it's done.

As I understand it, Chain of Craters is an emergency exit only right now.
From the park it is accessed from the first Left turn after entering through the park's gate, which is where you'd exit from after coming out of lower, lower Puna.
The park's road to the Kalapana lava viewing site.

EDIT:
It's the same road that was put back in during the threat of 130 being cutoff when Puna Pahoa was threatened.
It was subsequently cut off again when the flow resumed going back down to the water. They have again pushed a rough road across the new lava rock.

Right, but there's another way out too. It's the option of last resort.

I have heard nothing about that one.
Which one is that?
It won't be of much use if no one knows where its at.

I believe that would be the point -- notice how other existing "emergency" routes (eg, Railroad) are gated so as to prevent premature evacuation.

I hesitate to say exactly where it is because it's on private property. I heard rumors about it a couple of weeks ago and got specifics from the DOT guy, Jim, at the meeting yesterday. Please contact him for further information.

That has been SOP for the county.
All emergency routes are locked up.
Supposedly, only to be available if and when the county decides it is an emergency.
Not a problem as long as the county has its act together, and they always do, right?

Well, I do not need to worry about it.
I live in Leilani and am camped out in HPP for now.
Not likely that I'd need to use any lower, lower Puna escape route.

But, I'd bet there'r others that would like to know.

You're right. It's critical information. I suggest anyone who needs to know make a point of finding out directly from the source.

Correct: do not share information, people might get ideas. Better to rely on our trusted, proven leadership, who will confirm the information by denying that it exists.

I'm sure there are even looky-loos who would go "Sunday Driving" on the emergency road. Best if they simply stay home until the emergency is over and the gates are locked.

I don't see how there's any other possible route without a tremendous amount of work, nor any place that needs one. The Alaili bypass goes around the most dangerous area. Going up to the ranch and then east out to Black Sands still leaves you below the rift zone and any potential flow. You could get from there up to Alaili on the cinder roads without going to 132, but I don't see how that avoids any potential cutoffs. Getting from the cinder quarry to the old geothermal road requires bulldozing a mile and a half across an area riddled with massive cracks that a dozer could fall into without warning. If they did that with nobody noticing I'd be impressed...
