French bread crisis - TomK - 11-24-2024

Does anyone know where I can get a loaf of French bread? Safeway and KTA are out of freshly baked bread. This isn't an emergency, but I am sure it will upset someone.

Are you talking about baguettes? Thereʻs a little cafe in Keaʻau that sells sandwiches on their excellent homemade baguettes. Not sure if they sell the bread separately but itʻs worth a shot. Itʻs connected to a bakery in the same strip mall that is only open on weekends. Google Keaʻau Deli or Big Island Bakehouse.

Yes! Big Island Bakehouse. Only open 10-2 on Fri-Sun. Baguettes, sourdough, even rye bread. And lots of other good stuff. Get there closer to 10, tho. Things sell out.  Big Grin

Since you mentioned it.... unless the owners are French, there may be some cultural appropriation involved.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baguette

Waiholokui Garden's store in the old Pahoa Marketplace has been getting a great variety of onolicious breads (like challah!) from Pāpa'a Palaoa Bakery in Hilo. Maybe they could add baguette to their repertoire?

Oh, and Punatang, thanks for the baguette backstory.

Guess we need to just call it "sparkling long skinny bread" from now on?

Lol!!!!

My pleasure friendly ferret.  Tom perhaps you should consider sticking to English breakfast culture.

I was talking about the French bread loaf, not baguettes. No idea why this has turned into something about English breakfasts although I admit my post was tongue-in-cheek.

PS. Crumpets are on sale at KTA.

KTA is a good place for crumpets to be.

It is? I'll take your word for it.

No idea why this has turned into a thread about crumpets. What is a crumpet?  Sounds like tiny bits of bread formed together in the shape of domestic companions.

Speaking of breakfast, there is an oddly interesting, albeit expensive Sunday brunch at The Hilo Hawaiian. It is not Brittish. At least I don't think it is...
