a dirth of donuts - kalianna - 03-30-2025 What is it with the lack of donut stores around here? Who remembers Holy Donuts? They had a store in Kona for a long time and they did a foray into Hilo for a bit but got tired of hauling dough over the mountain and shut down there several years ago, and then in Kona during the pandemic. Since then, nothing. THOSE were donuts. Malasadas are not donuts. I tried the malasadas behind KTA and went into a sugar coma. And KTA, Safeway, etc. just donʻt cut it. Iʻm talkinʻ apple fritters, bear claws and bavarian cream. And my misguided spousal unit prefers cake donuts. Does anyone have any secret sources? RE: a dirth of donuts - TomK - 03-30-2025 Call the police non-emergency number. They should know. RE: a dirth of donuts - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 03-30-2025 Mochi donuts at Mt View Bakery. I’m Happy Dough, the apple fritters are fantastic! https://www.imhappydough.com/menu There’s also a relatively new bakery in the Keaau strip mall open Fri-Sat-Sun RE: a dirth of donuts - kalianna - 03-30-2025 I know all about the Keaʻau bakery. Great croissants and pastries but nary a donut in sight. I make do. ![]() Iʻm shocked about Happy Dough. Really??? I went to bananarama a few times and swore off vegan sweets forever. But from your link it looks like they have regular donuts too! Iʻll have to seek them out. Thank you!! Iʻll post a full report. Any other options? ETA: Now hold on a minute. I looked more closely at their site and discovered that everything is vegan. Iʻll give them a try anyway but now Iʻm skeptical... RE: a dirth of donuts - Chas - 03-30-2025 Yeah, coming from PA, good food is the thing I miss the most. Nothing here comes close when it comes to sweets, pizza, cheese steaks (no good rolls) and just plain comfort food. Healthy? Nah, delicious? Heck yeah!!! RE: a dirth of donuts - kalianna - 03-30-2025 I wouldnʻt go that far. Boogie Woogie is pretty good and Antics Pizza also works for me as does the Kea'au bakery for all but donuts. Agreed on cheesesteak roll but Van Vietnamese Banh Mi is a pretty tasty substitute. My ultimate comfort food is mac ʻn cheese and I make one large pan that I then freeze and disburse throughout the year during extended inclimate weather events and presidential elections. RE: a dirth of donuts - punikahakaiferret - 03-30-2025 Apologies in advance, but I simply could not NOT make a joke about "vegan bearclaws"...sooo, not made with actual bear? (As if standard bearclaws are?) :-D Actually, I imagine vegan donuts would probably still be quite good; just would be no eggs, butter, or milk/cream in them. And not fried in lard. So, while they would therefore be cholesterol-free, would still by no means be healthy...choke sugar and fat, nonetheless. But that's why they are meant as treats, right? RE: a dirth of donuts - Punatang - 03-31-2025 Seems like I remember seeing, but never eating, donuts at Mr. Eds Bakery in Honomu. I also think I've seen donuts at Tex Drive in in Honokaa at some point in the last decades but again, I would have gone for the malasadas or plate lunch. Once in a while Koa Puna or some other Harley kine Braddas do a Krispy Kreme fundraiser and you can snag some at Puna Kai. That's basically my annual donut fix. Since I feel like this is not enough help and I know how you love a good YouTube song video I will leave you with this ![]() RE: a dirth of donuts - kalianna - 03-31-2025 My Punaweb brethren, Iʻm so disappointed. Got the Iʻm Happy Dough apple fritter but itʻs not even really a donut, more like those old hostess pies. Only sweeter. Apple fritters have pieces of apple scattered throughout, not a big glob of apple pie filling. But it will do for now, taking it a quarter at a time. Liked the song, rather Bo Burnam-ish, which is okay by me but I just canʻt hang with sprinkles, which RFK will probably be banning soon anyway. So I appreciate the leads but the quest shall continue. Iʻm not becoming a Donut Karen, am I? RE: a dirth of donuts - punikahakaiferret - 03-31-2025 In the interest of "keepin' it real", may I present: https://www.smalltownwoman.com/apple-fritter/ Now, *this* is the way to do it! :-D |
