Has anyone gone to the Kazumura Lava Tube? Do you have to take a tour? I can't seem to find directions only tour companies.

the Kazumura Lava Tube has entrances all along its length. there is one across the street from the kilauea general store in volcano. the lowest I know of is on 21th street in hpp

somewhere (the hawaii spelunking society?) there is a map of the entire tube system with all the entrances marked. I got a hard copy of it when the survey was made in the early 90's. if it ever got online or not I do not know.

there are burial chambers (especially in the makai section) that should be avoided. the ones I know about are in side chambers so are avoidable.

there is also the possibility of man made barriers that have been constructed by people that believe they own the right of way in tubes below their property and have erected cement and rebar fences to prevent travelers from accessing the tube system. I believe this is motivated by a belief that excessive use by visitors has degraded the natural and cultural features of the cave. in some instances people have bought property specifically to gain control over part of this cave system. one of these is in place (or was when last I was there - years ago) somewhere around 34th or 35th st in orchidland where an entrance was found and became very popular in the early eighties. so much so that the front page of the trib the day puu oo first went off (jan 3, 1983) was split between the news about the eruption and the 'discovery' of what became known as the Kazumura Lava Tube

interesting post, dakine...

Since the state of Hawaii owns and retains all mineral rights, does not the state automatically own any/all lava tubes or caves as well?

There is a relatively new state law that prohibits traveling in lava tubes under another person's property without permission. Few people know about it, and some lava tube tour vendors are in denial about it.

I don't know why the Hawaii State Public Library System doesn't have a copy, but the Hawaii Speleological Survey put out a book, "Kazumura Cave atlas : Island of Hawaii : surveyed 1993 through 2000 with compass, inclinometer and tape by the Hawaii Speleological Survey," in 2004. The only place I can find so far that has it is ????Western Kentucky University???? There is a small map from the book at: http://www.cavegraphics.com/Kazumura Atlas Page.html. There is also a map of the Kipuka Kanohino cave system in Ka'u at: http://www.cavegraphics.com/Kanohina3dMap.html.

There is also some interesting stats on Kazumura and the other largest lava caves at: http://www.acave.us/llcave.htm.

Interesting article. What a wide variety of features. The authors, Kevin and Carlene Allred, are two of the three authors of the "Kazumura Cave Atlas" book.

Also, the Kapolei branch of the Hawaii State Public Library System does have the juvenile book, "Kazumura Cave : the world's longest lava tube" by Brad Burnham (Call # H 551.447 Bu) as does UH Hawaii Manoa and Maui College.

Greg, I believe the lava genitalia is located in the Kazumura Cave. I know it's in HPP.

yes.. and the pdf file that bystander links is as good as it gets as far as info is concerned. figure 12 on page 73 of that doc is a picture of the formation you are referring to, though that pic is fairly old. there was an earthquake in (I believe) '84 that put a crack (horizontally as seen in the picture) right across the entire formation
