Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - pahoated - 08-21-2012 There have been two convictions with confirmed smuggling of axis deer from Maui to the BI and hybrid sheep from the BI to Maui. Would have thought a boat would be more effective but the helicopter must have been quicker. These are the ones that have been caught, who knows how many aren't being caught. These hunters make a big self pity stink they do it for subsistence but seriously, how many people eat mountain sheep and axis deer? They do it for the thrill of the kill and it has come to this, where they "need a diversified hunt". Now, its been proven the hybrid sheep are trampling and eating the high altitude forests many native birds need to survive. quote: RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - Carey - 08-21-2012 How many sustenance hunters can afford to use a helicopter to bring in the deer.... or even a boat? If they really ARE sustenance hunters, they plenty pig, sheep, turkey, dove, chick'n, 'n such here... no need bring mo'! ADDED: these guys get misdemeanor charges, want probation & meanwhile their selfish ways have already cost all of us & may end up costing Big Island farmers & conservation groups millions.... sounds fair to me ... NOT!!!! these are merely selfish, spoiled brats that wanted to play with someone elses' invasive species.....and should pay the full cost of their actions. RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - csgray - 08-21-2012 I agree with Carey. This explains why they first showed up in higher altitude areas;, what a selfish, butt headed move! Talk about stuck on stupid! Carol RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - janeadams - 08-22-2012 I happened to see an article on this in the Boston Globe yesterday, and was just floored that I had to get it from a mainland news source. I forwarded the URL to a bunch of friends (here, Maui and mainland) who are concerned about this. I feel that the pilot is deserving of a lot of community service in establishing and improving native habitat, and that the officials need to aggressively prosecute the idiot who paid for it. That's the guy that needs to go to jail. Just can't believe someone is so self-centered... Jane RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - Bullwinkle - 08-22-2012 playing the devils advocate for a moment. Why are domestic / feral cats, mynah's, dogs, parrots etc. allowed and deer not ok for the environment?. Feral cats decimated the native species and are still not controlled as they rampage through the forest. Anyone get charged with the introduction of Coqui's? Is it about the eye of the beholder? Bias and recklessness comes in many forms imho. RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - dwedeking - 08-22-2012 @Bullwinkle - Don't forget the Day Gecko!!! (those cute, big eyed, "I'm innocent" reptiles that then drink your fruit based rum drink when your back's turned, oh the inhumanity!!!) RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - csgray - 08-22-2012 There is plenty of data available on the millions of dollars in damage done to crops, as well as damage to the wild life, where the axis deer already are. Farmers cannot afford to fence out a deer that jumps easily over a 10 foot fence, what they don't eat they trample. The genie is already out of the bottle on the feral cats, which do cause tremendous damage to the native ecosystems, but that shouldn't justify importing new problems. That is like saying that since the bank had already been robbed once, there is no need to prosecute a second bank robber. Moving those animals was an illegal act under Hawaii statutes, those laws need to be enforced and violators prosecuted and punished to the fullest extent possible. Or held liable for damages to Big Island crops, which could end up running into the millions if they cannot be eradicated. Carol RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - rainshadow - 08-22-2012 Well said. -- rainshadow RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - Bullwinkle - 08-22-2012 Seems to me its about other issues than invasive species if i were driving - 'buck a head bounty on feral cats maybe? - thats how the buffalo, wolves (and indians) were removed from the great plains....... Feral cats just dont p.o. the ranching interests with all due respect - that seems to be the elephant in the room. not some made up environment issue If the axis deer dont eat the scrub - the cattle will .......... RE: Hunters caught smuggling axis deer and sheep - MarkP - 08-22-2012 I don't fault Bulwinkle for the Devil's Advocate questions. He is correct as far as that goes. To attemp answers for his questions I would say cats were brought here a couple hundred years ago, coqui introduction was accidental. Heck, each of us has probably unwittingly transported a coqui or two ourselves. I do think there should have been severe legal consequences for Walmart, Home Depot, and even the state for inaction and lost opportunities but the case with the deer is a case of deliberately thwarting the law for personal gain at the expense of others. |
