mailbox waiting list - stringbucket - 06-06-2007 Hi! I'm a newcomer to your forum. I would really appreciate any info on getting on the mailbox waiting list. Me and my family plan on moving next January to HPP. We own a house that is currently being rented out at the moment. I heard the wait is really long. Any information would be helpful. Mahalo RE: mailbox waiting list - chrislo09 - 06-06-2007 I got one in hilo with at mail with us without waiting at all. It is 15 dollars a month. Hope that helps. Chris RE: mailbox waiting list - pslamont - 06-06-2007 We waited a year for our mail box. Just go to the post office and apply for one asap... you just wait it out. Until your box comes thru, you get your mail "general delivery" which is really no big deal. You simply call for it at the window of the post office. They will explain it to you there. Just another part of the charm of Hawaii.... we have fallen in love with this place and we have to take it with its quirks. Just think if it as part of the adventure! Pam Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! RE: mailbox waiting list - Les C - 06-06-2007 Up in Volcano, we had about a 2-3 month wait a bit over a year ago. It depends on your area. Pam, you applied at Mountain View, correct? For Volcano and Mountain View, we have no mail delivery, so we have to go the PO anyway and using General Delivery was not a problem for us. You do have to go when the counter is open, though, as opposed to having 24-hour access to your box. Having a General Delivery address was not a problem for getting a driver's license, most deliveries and most businesses (insurance, credit cards, etc.). Some people have posted in other threads a way to apply before you get to the Island, helping you to get a jump on the wait. I don't know what that process was, maybe someone will post that. RE: mailbox waiting list - Royall - 06-06-2007 Our postmaster in Oregon mailed a request for us before we moved. That gave us a 2 month jump on the waiting list at the Keaau PO. It was a 13 month long wait for our box to come through. It is strange to see a bank of new boxes still not numbered at the Keaau PO. I wonder why that is? Royall What goes around comes around! RE: mailbox waiting list - missydog1 - 06-06-2007 Is there any requirement to live in the postal zone prior to applying for the box? Or do you only need to show a local physical address when you finally get the box? Curious because I currently live in Hilo and in a month I won't have an address! Which is scary. (I'll be in a sublet in Puna) I guess I should go rent a mailbox. Is Hilo the only option for a private mailbox service? RE: mailbox waiting list - macuu222 - 06-06-2007 We got ours in Pahoa the same day. $15.00 for a 6 month rental. RE: mailbox waiting list - Suki - 06-06-2007 A few weeks ago I was in line at the PO in Keaau. The couple at the window were seriously 'outraged' that the wait for the PO boxes was so long. The male argued that "I bought a something something thousand dollar house, shouldn't I get the previous owners box? They dont need it?" There were a few people in line who wanted to offer their view on his 'I own therefore, I am!' stance. Some people. RE: mailbox waiting list - Carey - 06-06-2007 Stringbucket, Could you see if you can use the one your renters have, if they are moving far away? We found that keeping the phone # of the previous residence saved time in getting our phone installed...this might be another instance where keeping may be less of a wait than getting anew! RE: mailbox waiting list - Les C - 06-06-2007 quote: Kathy, I don't recall the requirements about residency for a box application. You should be able to find out from the PO. You could file a change of address at the Hilo PO to forward to General Delivery at Kea'au or Pahoa to take care of interim mail. There's a mail box service in Pahoa between the Sirius and Black Rock cafes. I don't know if they have anything available. It's odd that he hasn't posted anything on this thread. Business must be doing better and he's too busy to check the forum. |
