giving birth in hawaii - Ayana2011 - 04-21-2013

I have a situation here. I'm pregnant with my second child and wanting to have a vbac. My first born was born at the waimea women's center and it turned out very bad despite everyone telling me its the best place to go on big island. I ended up having an emergency c-section. Nurses were coming in and out of the room telling me different things. Doctors and midwives were ganging up on me pressuring me to have a c section after being up for two days in labor and it was progressing very slowly. Baby also had decel in heartbeat according to one nurse but to the other she was fine and didn't see anything wrong. They ended up calling CPS on me because of my inability to nurse after surgery and refusing formula! I eventually got it after one of the nice nurses was patient with me and helped me. So anyway I've heard that Hilo medical center doesn't allow for vbacs because they do not have an anesthesiologist on site. Birthing at home with a midwive would be to costly and I worry about complications. Has anyone ever done a vbac at Hilo medical center? Do you know any doctors that support vbacs, I currently have Dr. Eric helms. Please any info would help thank you for your time.

Hilo medical centers policy is, once you have a c-section, that is the only way they will deliver any more babies you have.

spend $ and fly to Oahu? Stay with friends? Then you could go to queens or something like that but I wonder if it's any better?

Maybe Maui?

Wish you all the best. I hear it's the hilo medical center is one of the worst places to go. But... I am sure some people luck out and have a good experience!

Wow, I am almost started crying hearing about your first birth. I had similar problems but had the first baby on the mainland while people were yelling at me to have a c-section and I ended up tearing so bad, that I was then advised to never have a vaginal delivery again.(Colorado) Second baby was breech, and this combined with past history was why I had second baby by scheduled cesarean and it was horrible. I had incision pain for 4 years and couldnt wear a seatbelt comfortably in the car- and now, 6 yrs later, still have residual pain. I didnt see the baby for hours and there was some kind of complication. Horrid. Third baby I was so afraid to go to the hospital for my cesarean, that by the time I got there (in Austin Texas)- I was already 5 cm dilated and I actually think that possibly I had so little pain because some nerves had been cut during the prior cesarean (only possible good thing I can even remotely think of). Anyhow, I by chance (whoever was "oncall") got an old experienced doctor and asked him if he knew how to do "medialateral episiotomies"? And he did (they used to do them to avoid c-sections, but a lot of the young doctors dont know how to do them- they make an incision on the side so the baby will fit though). I then decided on the spot to do a VBAC and I refused the cesarean. It created quite a ruckus. I dont really know what your legal rights are in this situation. I mean, the baby will be born one way or another and I dont know if they can sedate the mother or put her in restraints if she is refusing a cesarean. (probably they could). Anyhow, I got lucky (relatively speaking) with the third baby. The doctor cut me on the side and the baby fit through and didnt have any stress. I mostly recovered physically, but I am so terrified of childbirth that it is not something I will ever attempt again. I guess the point of this post is that childbirth is really really dangerous and you should probably only do it with a level 4 trauma nursery on standby in a big hospital on the mainland. I know that supposedly this is a "natural process" and I know that many people will disagree with me, but the medical facilities here in Hawaii are wonderful for routine things and common problems, but birth is just so very unpredicatable that I just dont know. My sister had a wonderful midwife birth up in Waimea and thinks I'm crazy by the way, but you just cant be too careful with you and the baby's life. And I am sorry if this is "TMI" but I think people should talk about these things and not gloss it over. Lot's of people have problems from having babies. It is a rough road. GL! I am praying your second baby is a "piece of cake".

Sorry I said mainland when it could be possible there is a level 4 trauma center in Oahu. I dont know the hospitals there. I am only familiar with the hospitals on the bigisland. Maybe Oahu is an option. If you show up in labor they'll take care of you. You might get someone really good "oncall" like I did. You just never know... All the prenatal stuff is a bunch of bologna in my opinion. I did yoga. I'm in shape. Birth is just some kind of weird lottery.

RE: giving birth in hawaii - unknownjulie - 04-22-2013

Man, I'd better get my thought in order before I post. So sorry, but it's a "level 4 NICU" that I'm referring to. Trauma level ratings refer to facilities contained within an ED.

Thanks for replying. I would love to go to Oahu or mainland to have baby but we just can't afford that. Does the Ronald McDonald house take people like me or is it only high risk pregnancies? I don't have friends to stay with. It's terrible that since I don't have good insurance or a lot of money that I have to be forced to have another c-section.

RE: giving birth in hawaii - nani1970 - 04-22-2013

I had two C- sections in the 70's,
And had 2 VBAC in the 80's.
All went well.
I was also a birth teacher for 10 years.

Unfortunately, things aren't conducive here for VBACs.
I don't see a big VBAC movement here in the islands.
You would most likely have to go to the mainland or Oahu.
I would love to help you in any way I can.
