New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - uneedawish - 04-24-2014 On May 11th 2014, (Mother's day gift to our moms, I guess), a $1.00 per vehicle fee will be collected at the entrance of the market. No change will be given, so have EXACTLY $1.00. I expect there will be a lot of traffic congestion, confusion and frustration that morning. Maku'u Farmers Market recently had to change the way they rent available spaces to vendors. In the past, vendors had to line up as early as 2:00 am along Highway 130 to ensure an available booth rental. The police department said that cars lined up on the Highway were a safety issue. Now vendors put their driver's licenses in a bag and spaces are rented at random at 6:00 am. All proceeds will go to a fund towards a community center there in the Maku'u Hawaiian Homestead. By the way, vendors will also have to pay the $1.00 fee. Might there be a better way to collect funds for a community center? I found a phone number @ tripadvisor.com for Maku'u Farmers Market if anyone has questions or comments, 896-5537. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - lavalava - 04-24-2014 Uncle Roberts has been charging 1-2 dollars for awhile now, no big wonder that the Maku'u folks are following suit. $1 is a small price to pay, I suspect small enough to not affect attendance. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - Chunkster - 04-24-2014 This will probably cause traffic back-ups more dangerous than the vendors waiting at 2 a.m., and the congestion/confusion will probably keep some customers away. I'm staying away until it sorts itself out. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - Guest - 04-24-2014 Our local farmers market and flea market charges $4 per car. Its also huge though and you can get everything from a parrot to a pineapple to a pocketbook. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - unknownjulie - 04-25-2014 Oh wow, I expect cars to now be parking all over the place to avoid the fee. Is it per person if you walk in? Or only per car? This could be a mess. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - leilanidude - 04-25-2014 Where they stop the vehicles to collect the fee will be very important. If they try to do so anywhere near the front gate - the traffic will back up on the highway. Speaking of the market and traffic - why don't they allow right turn only exits to the highway from the North gate? That would alleviate a lot of the driving all the way around the market that occurs. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - Guest - 04-25-2014 Terrible Idea to charge this poor community on Hawaiian soils any more money. Most of these folks are trying to save a dollar by going to the market on sundays rather than the big box stores during the week. Also another terrible idea to throw drivers licenses into a bowl or hat for a drawing of some sorts. They need to doze a back road from this market that will allow folks a way in or out, not from the highway. Maybe a completely new venue would be a better situation for our community, like behind Malama market?. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - kalakoa - 04-25-2014 In theory, any driveway onto a State highway requires DOT approval, of which one component is the "traffic study"; when the Market exceeds the original traffic levels upon which their driveway approval was based, they should lose their access. Rules are for everyone, and the "traffic study" has been used to deny other permits, so it would be only fair. Not holding my breath. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - Guest - 04-25-2014 Maybe this is why "Pearls" closed or was closed?. Pearls driveway was from the volcano highway, This was going to start causing more traffic problems because the food was soooo good it was a matter of time. RE: New fee when you visit Maku'u Farmers market - dayna - 04-25-2014 I avoid that market now as it is due to the traffic issues and people just acting kinda nutty in the parking "lot". No way am I going to deal with it now. And I've never paid to park at Uncle Roberts, I just park and walk in. So do lots of other folks, it helps cut down on traffic congestion closer to the market.
