A tip to save you money $$$. - Lee G - 10-20-2007

No, this is not a ad and I don't sell insurance. We just switched from Progressive to Geico. Our 6 month premium went from $1400 to $685.00

Wow! That is a lot. It is almost abnormal. Did you change any coverages or raise a deductible? Sometimes people do not take that in to account when they compare premiums. Did you have a ticket or accident drop in the last year? Some other change? One thing that matters in this instance is the two companies. Progressive caters mostly to non-standard risk but in the last few years they have been targeting the standard market. Most times the premium will be a little higher for a standard driver than if the standard driver went with a standard company (GEICO, State (Snake) Farm, Allstate etc).

Another thing to check is claims customer service. It is pretty important since it is the only time you will ever need them. In your case you made a good switch as Geico always rates higher in customer service than Progressive.

One more tip. If you are with a carrier that has multi-line coverage check to see if you get a discount for having your home & auto + any other coverages you need together.

You should shop your rates at least every two years to see if you will have substantial saving elsewhere.

Lee, I've been with Geico for a few years now(10 years), and for the most part I'm happy with them. As long as nothing happens you're safe! But right before we moved here from Oahu my wife got hit by a driver with no license and no insurance. In the police report it stated my wife wasn't at fault whatsoever. This is over a year ago now. Within two weeks or less Geico require that we paid a $500.00 deductible. Guess what? Geico still hasn't paid us back! They claim they can't collect from the driver at fault who didn't have insurance or license....duh!!! They told my wife they have to collect from him first. That will be a cold day in hell befre that happens. Sheeezz, even in police report they stated that driver seemed under the influnce of something illegal, yet Geico won't give us back our $500.00 deductible?

Now, i'm forced to either hire a 'Samoan Collecting Agency', or go to Oahu myself and hunt down the jerk and put him in a full-nelson, or put his testies in a C clamp and give it a few torks! Try to get my money back from Geico is like pulling teeth. I'd probably have better luck with this a-hole who hit my wife at intersection?!

Handle every situation like a dog,If you can't eat it or hump it,piss on it and walk away...

Beachboy, sounds like maybe you didn't have uninsured motorist coverage and had to claim it under your collision with the deductible. I too was hit by someone with no insurance but Geico took care of everything (including a rental car) because I had the uninsured motorist coverage. I was very impressed with how quickly Geico handled everything.

The Bear and I saved over $750 per year on two vehicles by switching from Allstate to Geico about a year after moving to Hawaii. I did a lot of research before switching and found that Geico was generally rated very high on customer service by their Hawaii policy holders. (I have always been sure to get uninsured motorist coverage, and believe it to be essential.)

We had previously been insured for over 20 years in Georgia by State Farm, but their local agents in Hilo were not eager to cover us despite never having had a homeowners' claim and no auto claims or tickets in over 10 years. They kept finding hoops to make us jump through and making snarky comments, so we went with Allstate until we found how much money we could save with Geico. Unfortunately, Geico would not insure our home due to the fact that we have a Rottweiler. Otherwise, they seem great.

Cheers,
Jerry

Does Geico have a Hilo-based agent/office?

We too have Geico and they have been great - even with 2 fender benders in 4 years - our rate was raised only $36 per 6 months.

Also when one of our cars had a timing chain break - and it was out of service for 3 months - they advised us how to do the policy so that we saved money on it while it was down.

We've had Geico for about 5 years. Progressive had been charging us almost 3 times what Geico charges us for 2 cars. I've always loved them, even when Erik got into an accident. Some jerk was backing up on the street and hit Erik, Geico was so great. Not only did they advise Erik what to do to collect from the other driver, but they also helped him negotiate the repairs even though they didn't have to. They also called on Erik's behalf and told the other insurance company what would happen if they didn't pay him....

We're transferring our insurance to HI and they've still been absolutely wonderful, and less expensive than the other companies we've looked into on the island.

We have had Geico for one year now and our rate from the first policy to this year has been cut in half. We pay $800 a year for two cars with 100/300 coverage but only liability. We are very happy with their service.
