County Department of Agriculture? - kalakoa - 03-17-2016 "We've always been the food basket," Wille said. http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/news/local-news/hard-row-hoe-county-department-agriculture It's not known how great an economic driver agriculture currently is, because the state quit compiling county-level statistics in 2009. I think more could be accomplished with a County-wide "Ag Strategy" instead of creating 9 new paid staff positions -- starting with a way to "reclaim" existing vacant subdivision lots for agriculture... RE: County Department of Agriculture? - Rob Tucker - 03-17-2016 Can anyone recall the County ever solving a problem? RE: County Department of Agriculture? - kalakoa - 03-17-2016 No, this new Department would solve a problem: somewhere on island, there are 9 people not yet employed by County. RE: County Department of Agriculture? - Peter Easterling - 03-17-2016 "Can anyone recall the County ever solving a problem?" Pohoiki (Isaac Hale Beach Park) was a rough place 15 years ago. It's now a friendly place for families, boaters, surfers, campers and anyone who comes down there. The bathrooms (kept immaculate), the parking area for the boats, the kiddie playground (recently improved with sturdy tarp roofs) did not happen all by itself. The County is to be credited in large part for making it a better place for everyone. That is one example of which I am pretty familiar. I love and appreciate the do-it-yourself Style of the Big Island. Not saying the County does everything. But they certainly don't do nothing. And this and a post on another topic by you, Rob, struck me as snippy and a bit over the top. You don't have to troll your own site. RE: County Department of Agriculture? - Rob Tucker - 03-17-2016 Thanks for the reminder. Issac Hale was a decent job. I see so many failures it is nice to know something gets done once in awhile. RE: County Department of Agriculture? - knieft - 03-17-2016 One example is one example. Rob can say whatever he wants, however he wants. Snippy? No problem. Over the top? No problem. And concedes your single example? No problem. Perhaps folks don't really appreciate what they have here on Punaweb... Cheers, Kirt RE: County Department of Agriculture? - kalakoa - 03-17-2016 I see so many failures it is nice to know something gets done once in awhile. So: how do we improve the success rate and/or get projects that are actually what the people want? Case in point: County says ag is our second-largest revenue source (after tourism), there must be a way to facilitate ag without creating 9 new staff positions. Simple stuff, like easing up on the permit requirements. RE: County Department of Agriculture? - PunaMauka2 - 03-17-2016 "Perhaps folks don't really appreciate what they have here on Punaweb..." Hmm. Or alternately, and a bit less virtual reality-ey, perhaps some folks choose not to fully appreciate what we have here in Puna. Edit: +some RE: County Department of Agriculture? - kalakoa - 03-17-2016 choose not to fully appreciate what we have here in Puna Ah, so ignoring the problems because they're too far removed from daily life? Seriously, I'm open to suggestion. RE: County Department of Agriculture? - knieft - 03-17-2016 quote: Oh come on. Does anyone in their right mind think the county government is useful or positive? What "we have here in Puna" is likely in spite of the politicians and the idiocracy of the county government. Back on topic. What can the county do to enable agriculture? A Wille created bureaucracy? I'll go out on a limb and say that isn't the answer to problem that doesn't exist. At every turn with this council member I simply roll my eyes instead of tearing up. At least the article made it sound as if her idea may go nowhere fast. Cheers, Kirt |
