Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - Ino - 01-18-2017 A significant trade wind event is about to happen this weekend, Sat./ Sun. 1-21-22 -2017. Strong High pressure chasing a strong North Pacific Cold Front will move across the islands this weekend. The front looks like it will stall out over the BI Monday and beyond. Fortunately this wind event will be a short duration event. The High is moving very fast. Since the high winds will be from our usual wind direction N/NE it will not be as destructive as when the winds are from the opposite direction S/SW. Northern Islands and areas are much more exposed than Puna but we’ll notice the winds too; http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display_alt.cgi?a=hi_slp The event is not on this model yet as this model only goes out 60 hours or 2 and a half days but does verifies well; http://www.stormsurfing.com/cgi/display_alt_3h60.cgi?a=bigi The Honolulu NWS has also issued a Special Weather Statement; http://www.prh.noaa.gov/data/HFO/SPSHFO.1701181941 Hang onto your keiki! RE: Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - PaulW - 01-19-2017 Thank you Ino. RE: Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - ElysianWort - 01-19-2017 Ino you are the best! No nonsense and extremely accurate weather facts. If you guys recall in the years past there have been some wind storms around this time of year and I remember a few different people saying, "Wow, these wind storms caused more damage on my property than the hurricanes and tropical storms!" They never affected me though. Hmm maybe I'm in a semi-protected location with enough forest in all directions? Hmm I guess there's always storm prep that one could do. To batten down the hatches or not... RE: Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - TomK - 01-19-2017 Oddly enough, MKWC are currently not calling for high winds on Mauna Kea over the weekend (https://goo.gl/wlkX06), but the NWS warning remains (which includes the summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea). Current MKWC forecasts can be seen here: http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu/forecast/mko/ Ino, curious if you have an opinion. Thanks. RE: Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - Ino - 01-20-2017 It’ll be an interesting wx situation. Cold front passages here on BI are problematic because of the mountains. Easy for the fronts to get hung up/fractured, dissipated etc. here. The front is predicted to get hung up here-lots of rain here and current models and forecasts don’t show a frontal passage here. Hopefully Tues. the rain will let up. The highest winds are behind the front with some lighter winds (breezy) ahead of the front. I decided to post the Alert because it’ll be really close. The Northern islands will get raked as the front passes them. Winds could reach 50 mph +. NW part of the BI will get high winds. We should still notice breezy conditions here but it looks like the damaging winds will stay North at this time. The High weakens as it fills the strong storm Low off the West Coast as it moves rapidly to our East. Here’s a high resolution model that shows where the winds could be on the BI–in knots, http://tinyurl.com/go46kvz Click on right side of graph to advance-left to reverse. Under regions (Left side), use the drop down bar to look at different areas. Here’s another model that I enjoy verifying and it’s can be accurate; https://www.windfinder.com/weather-maps/forecast/usa#7/19.932/-155.901 The Alert is a heads-up as a significant wx event will happen so close to us and as we all know wx forecasts are inexact and if the front does not stall and we get a passage here on the BI the high winds will rake Puna and East Hawaii. Puna will probably dodge this wx bullet but it’s going to be real close and I would not be too surprised if the high winds develop here. RE: Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - TomK - 01-20-2017 "Here’s a high resolution model that shows where the winds could be on the BI–in knots, http://tinyurl.com/go46kvz" Thanks, Ino, that link is fascinating! It looks as though North Kohala will get some very strong winds but it's much more complex for the Hilo and Puna area. For those unfamiliar with the wind symbols in the plot (wind barbs), this place has a clear explanation: http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/guides/maps/sfcobs/wnd.rxml RE: Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - terracore - 01-21-2017 Here's the latest from the NWS: ... Foster RE: Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - alaskyn66 - 01-21-2017 I don't know about puna but hilo is getting a nice 15-20 MPh breeze right now. With a little bigger gusts. Eta.. sideways rain off and on ... RE: Wind Storm Alert for Hawaii - mermaid53 - 01-21-2017 Pounding surf, gusty winds and sideways rain here on Kaloli Pt this evening.
