No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - alaskyn66 - 10-02-2017 A few pages back punatalk was discussing disasters and what not. And after following the las Vegas ordeal last night, I did a simple Google search and it appears big island doesn't have any blood banks. Doctor shortage aside, wouldn't it be of benefit to us to have a local supply of blood. ..or in the Vegas case... a way to donate Blood? RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - kalakoa - 10-02-2017 wouldn't it be of benefit to us to have a local supply of blood We do; it's on Oahu, and running low on supply because they had to move out of the way of rail and nobody knows where the new building is. Just a quick helicopter flight away. RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - Mac2017 - 10-02-2017 No blood bank that's nuts! I'm not trying to be disrespectful kalakoa, but any way you look at a quick helicopter flight from Oahu puts you well outside the golden hour. That puts your odds of survival very low. Are we sure sure the hospitals here don't have a supply they keep on hand in house? RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - leilanidude - 10-02-2017 Are we sure sure the hospitals here don't have a supply they keep on hand in house? ---------- Yes they do. RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - kalakoa - 10-02-2017 a quick helicopter flight from Oahu puts you well outside the golden hour Exactly my point. Never forget that Hawaii (and especially the Big Island) is a "lifestyle choice". You are free to choose otherwise, if you think you might want medical care or roads or a TGI Friday's. RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - alaskyn66 - 10-02-2017 I'm sure the hospital has a limited supply.. but what if something happened. That required a substantial amount of blood.. ( looking at you vegas) as far as I know.. private hmos don't stockpile blood. Hilo hospital is good for stabilizing people but if something happens here.. (looking at you north korea.. or major hurricane).. we are screwed. (That's the price you pay for living on an island..) ..no, no its not , this the twenty first century..not the 1800's RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - jackson - 10-02-2017 Hilo Hospital has a supply of whole blood, FFP and clotting factor. You can call them to find out how to donate blood. No sense bringing this up and not donating. RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - Seeb - 10-02-2017 I believe the hospital has a small amount. But nowhere in the state would have enough for a disaster without collecting or bringing from the mainland. RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - alaskyn66 - 10-02-2017 Only reason I brought this up is I have a rare blood type.. and I doubt there is a stockpile of ab- on island. .. if the hospitals here do have a supply why can't they get it locally.. instead of waiting 45 minutes for a choppa from Oahu. RE: No bloodbanks on hawai'i island. - terracore - 10-02-2017 I knew somebody on the mainland that was AB- and a donor, and they would call her from time to time explain they were low on her blood type and could she come in and donate. She always did. One time she offered to be a bone marrow transplant donor and she found out that to be a bone marrow donor, SHE would have to pay to have her marrow tested to see if there were any matches. And it was expensive. That was almost 20 years ago so not sure if it's still the case but we were floored when we found this out. |
