The Thieves - John S. Rabi - 04-09-2008

I guess even the "nicer" subdivisions are under attack. Somebody used a power cutter to cut off the lockbox on my Leilani Estates house and get in. There was nothing to steal so they moved on, but this is getting ridiculously sad.

Does it make sense to invest in CCTV?

RE: The Thieves - Guest - 04-09-2008

Stillhope - No

Rabi -

Lucky you didn't find people just squatting. My ohana checked up on a lot and found squatters!

I am looking into a motion sensor activated outdoor floodlight linked to a recording camera. I will pay for it by collecting the rewards for recovering stolen stuff from the scum bags.I know the reward part is wishful thinking. I like the quote "Steal a mans tools and he will quit work to hunt you down"

RE: The Thieves - Bullwinkle - 04-09-2008

I put in the full alarm, it calls my cell if there is a trip of one of the sensors. or it will call an alarm center. I also have alarm / silent alarm options

ademco vista 20 is the panel, motion detectors and window and door trips, 99% of the deterrent is that little red led at the door that says "armed"

pm me if you need some tips

Thanks for that info Bullwinkle.

I will look that up. Knowledge is power. Sad that those measures are needed, but it is a small segment causing the problem and I still love the aloha spirit on the B.I. and on this forum.

I may need some tips, my dad once told me "always be a little afraid when dealing with electricity"[Big Grin]

who was it? ... "walk softly, carry a big stick" one can do that with much Aloha

RE: The Thieves - waynesb - 04-09-2008

Origin of "speak softly and carry a big stick"

The widespread use of this proverb began with American president Theodore Roosevelt. In a speech in Chicago in April 1903, he said:

There is a homely old adage which runs: 'Speak softly and carry and big stick; you will go far.' If the American nation will speak softly, and yet build and keep at a pitch of the highest training a thoroughly efficient navy, the Monroe Doctrine will go far.

The proverb is sometimes cited as being of African origin, although I can find no evidence for that. If it truly was an 'old adage' in 1903 it ought to be easy to find earlier citations of it, but I can find none. It is certainly possible that Roosevelt coined the phrase himself.

StillHope, I vote Yes on the CCTV

CCTV (wilife) and a heavy duty electric locking gate gives me piece of mind.... and you'll know exactly who is messing with your property!

Heres is a video captured from one of our camera's while we were at the beach back in January.

Makes ya nervous knowing their are people around here who just drive around looking for easy victims to take advantage of...

John, your place is on the main thoroughfare in Leilani ya?

Perhaps active and noisy alarms will alert your neighbors if they are close enough.

This is very sad, even if nothing of value is taken, the feeling of intrusion is so upsetting. My hope is with the economic problems deepening, this will not escalate.

Good luck and take good care of each other.
