FYI-
This the TENTH crash at the same intersection in 4.5 years, and previous to this time frame there have been many more.

Stupid happens.

RE: Crash at Bottom of Makuu in HPP - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-03-2025

Driving down Maku'u:

There's a stop sign on 1st Street.
A block and a half later there's another stop sign.
On the rock wall across from that stop sign are multiple large red reflectors and smaller yellow reflectors.

It's not the road that's a problem.

RE: Crash at Bottom of Makuu in HPP - Patricia - 04-03-2025

Saying "stupid happens" is pretty callous.

And the intersection IS the problem.

Why do you think there are flashing lights, rumble strips, and arrow signs at the bottom of the Inouye Hwy?

Why is there a round-about at Ainaloa?

And another at Pahoa Town?

You are being dismissive of an individual's life and the fact that there have been multiple accidents which we, as neighbors and residents of that area, have tried to bring to the attention of those in charge numerous times.

RE: Crash at Bottom of Makuu in HPP - Obie - 04-03-2025

At the bottom of Daniel K Inouye people still drive straight ahead and don't stop.
The 1st night the Ainaloa roundabout was open a drunk driver drove straight thru the bus stop and sheared off two streetlight poles.
Cars have driven thru the fences on the Pahoa roundabout numerous times and at least 2 cars almost ended up inside Longs.

Rumble strips would probably help on Makuu but they make so much noise that one of your neighbors would probably remove them. Do you realize that people have driven into the ocean at the bottom of Makuu before that house was built in 2011.

Passed out drunk drivers don't see the stop signs or flashing lights so please quit blaming the board.

That lady the other night had been drinking and didn't have a seatbelt on. She never touched her brakes.

My callousness applies only to those driving drunk, speeding and not wearing sleep belts. There are already laws against these things. What do you suggest, Patricia?

RE: Crash at Bottom of Makuu in HPP - Patricia - 04-03-2025

I will be honest, I dont like you Obie. However, that will have nothing to do with my reply. Yes, I "realize" a lot. I am not that "new" and I interact with my neighbors and others in the community. Do you realize that before there were houses at the cliffs people used to ride their cars down here, on the lava?

Of course accidents still happen. That is why they are called accidents. Do you realize that since the round about at Ainaloa was installed fatalities have greatly decreased?

We cannot stop people from making bad choices that impact their and sometimes others lives. But we CAN try to minimize the damage.

Lastly, I sure as hell don't need YOU to tell me about the lady in the crash and what SUPPOSEDLY did or did not happen (BTW there are about 6 feet of very light skid marks). And I will swear on a stack that she WASN'T speeding. How do I know? Because we heard it. My son immediately ran down, found our she wasn't responsive. I called 911. We WAITED for the first responders to come- her doors were locked, her radio playing.  It was all, actually pretty awful. And I am pretty pissed, after almost FIVE years (my neighbor's longer) of trying to get someone on the freaking HPPOA board to do something about it. But this is what you get- half-ass. Redirect restricted road fee money and half-ass the roads.

RE: Crash at Bottom of Makuu in HPP - Obie - 04-04-2025

No board on this earth can stop someone from driving intoxicated and not wearing a seatbelt.

RE: Crash at Bottom of Makuu in HPP - Patricia - 04-04-2025

That's deflection and callous. No one can stop people from smoking and contracting lung cancer. In fact, so far we don't seem able to or stop ANY cancer. But we have sure thrown a lot of money into trying. And to some extent THAT has saved lives.

This isn't a question of seatbelts, drinking, talking/texting on your phone, or any other kind of distraction. This is about not doing due diligence. Spending money that is meant for roads- to make them better, SAFER- on "so much more" is wrong. And a conscientious board would KNOW this ADMIT it and do what's right.
