Mauna Kea Toll Road? - kalakoa - 05-20-2026

https://www.civilbeat.org/2026/05/dhhl-considers-tolls-for-mauna-kea-access-road/

The Hawaiian Homes Commission is considering proposals to charge fees to visit Mauna Kea and use those funds to pay for reforestation efforts and restoration of cultural sites.

How much the tolls would cost and the specific projects that would be funded under these efforts is not yet clear.

There was a toll booth, briefly, in 2018.  A wooden shack on DHHL (?) land manned by advocates who stopped cars and provided information about ongoing protests, Native Hawaiian interests in the area and interpretation of legal arguments concerning Mauna Kea Access Road.  They stressed payment of a toll was not required.  Should drivers wish to offer a donation however, it was gladly accepted.

Have to wonder where that money really went or ended up... Just like the millions in donations for "The Hub" during the Fissure 8 eruption.

Colonizer: You need to give up your indigenous way of life and adopt free-market capitalism.
Native: [Sets up toll booth on land they own]
Colonizer: Not like that!

If you're going to require people to be propertarians, then expect them to make maximal use of their property. Around the world, chokepoint capitalism is becoming all the rage - libertarians should be rejoicing at the pay-as-you-go, toll-for-service models.

Tend your own garden brah.

I wonder if that's what god said to Adam.

In any case, it seems a genuine question to me. I don't know if there were millions of dollars in donations, but why not answer the question if you know the answer? Instead, you tell leilanidude to tend their own garden. Why would you do that?  If you don't know the answer, why not say "I don't know what you're talking about"?

Dude-- Where did you see/read that there were millions in donations at The Hub?

RE: Mauna Kea Toll Road? - TomK - 05-22-2026

That's so much better than telling someone to tend their own garden.

I'd second asking the question of the Dude about alleged "millions" being donated to "The Hub" and the insinuation of financial malfeasance.

Lots of online talk went around about the amounts of donated monies to numerous charities (and some weren't even charities) was going around in 2018/19. Even the Red Cross was suspect. They admitted to well over $10 mil in donations attributed directly to the lava event and were simply handing out $200 Visa cards.
