The thing I didn't get was they just didn't close the beach...but the entire park.
Here is the message that was posted on the Civil Defense website:

This is a shark sighting and beach closure notification for Sunday, September 07, 2008 at 11:00. A Hawai’i Fire Department (HFD) aerial survey reports the sighting of three sharks in the area between Puako and Mauna Kea Beach. Between 9:00 and 9:30 this morning, a 10-12’ Tiger shark was seen approximately 600 yards outside the Puako boat ramp, an 8’ shark of unknown type was seen approximately 300 yards off Maumae Beach, and an 8’ foot shark of unknown type was approximately 200 yards off Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.
* State Parks has closed Hapuna and Wailea Beaches for the remainder of the day.
* No other public beaches are affected at this time all other County and State Beach Parks are open at this time.
* Anyone planning to visit beaches in the South Kohala area is asked to exercise caution and obey any posted warnings from the Department of Natural Resources (DLNR) regarding unsafe conditions.
* Please obey Ocean Safety personnel if advised to leave the water.
The HFD and the Department of Land and Natural Resources will continue to monitor for shark activity. Conditions will be re-evaluated tomorrow morning.

Probably because people don't listen. The easiest way to keep them out of the water is to shut the gates.

It's ridiculous to close the whole park. Post signs and flags. If they ignore the signs and flags it the Darwin effect.

So what! I know that any aerial survey of any Florida beach will show many sharks, sometimes hundreds. They live there. Of course Florida always has the most reported attacks. Some things come with the territory. I won't go swimming at dusk or dawn, or knowingly in a school of fish.

There does seem to be a whole lot of shark munchin' going on. Gotta get me one of them flowers. Or......someone who will tell me "Glen, don't go in the ocean right now!"

Avoid dusk and dawn swims. Stay out if you see bait fish churning or other running schools of fish. Avoid cloudy water.

I know about the dusk and dawn, and the schooling fish, and stay out after a storm when the water is cloudy. thats when the tiger sharks come in to feed on turtles.
Does this flower coincide with the breeding season of the sharks?
are their different breeding seasons for certain breeds? I know the hammer heads come into the bay near hilo to birth their young.

Shark attacks can happen at anytime anywhere.
Don't believe the science behind things.
My Neighbor was eaten by a shark last week.

I don't see that you wrote about it though, Damon. It just looks like you reported that it occurred, or did I not click enough in the right places.
