I would like to know how to get a list of retailers for furniture, food, household...etc. Where can I find a list that will include any Target-type stores as well as supermarkets?

When we came to house hunt, we made sure we secured a phone book to take back with us to the mainland. Used it many times.

We too brought a phone book back with us as well as subscribing to the Sunday Hilo Tribune. Both have helped tremendously.

Carrie, before we moved here last year, I got a copy of the Paradise Yellow pages. They shipped it mainland for free. Call (800)489-8230. It has a lot of the typical Hawaii phone book stuff, airports, maps - inc. tsunami danger zones- tide tables, and typical phone book listings of stores, coupons & stuff.
Good luck on your move (p.s., I made sure that the phone book with me on the plane ride over...helped find things during the first few hectic days here.)

For the most part you can find pretty much whatever you need on island "in general".
Costco, Kmart, Walmart, Safeway, Home Depot, Lowes on Kona side.
Walmart, Home Depot, Safeway on Hilo side.
There are, of course, many smaller independant companies offering nearly the same products that are very reputable and even cheaper. You will find them mentioned here and there in the forum.
I only mention the "Big Box" retailers as a point of reference to the mainland.

What is a "Target type" store? And why would you want it?
There are lots of stores in Hilo and lots of stores in Kona and a few stores here and there in other places. A lot of things and services are from people's houses, so when you are looking for a specific item, ask your neighbors and maybe they will know the best place. There aren't that many places on this island, drive around the island (there is basically only one road so it isn't difficult to see all the retail areas) and then you will know what's available.
'Course if you get all this stuff, then you will have to be busy taking care of it and busy making money to pay for it and won't have much time to hang out at the beach!

...I guess we would need a matress to sleep on and other household stuff. We just did a major "PURGE" of stuff to make this move...we are really into being minimalists after that hassle. But there are some things that one needs to have and Target is a better choice for me over any WalMart store who just about uses slave-labor and (from personal experience) treats their employees poorly. I like Target but I don't NEED it. We won't be on the island until September or so...just trying to get a feel for what the local retailers are like.

I've heard mention of Costco for mattresses and Sears. We have a new mattress so will be ok on that item. We too have and are continuing to purge all the extraneous stuff and would like to make a minimalist home. I've taken care of a home for too many years and I'm of the mind of the less the better! If you want to see me I'll be in the yard, that's where I want to live and have a bench too!!
That said I hope to have enough room to add a few pieces of local, tropical, ethical type furnishings, or vases or foot,step, garden stools my personal jones when it comes to furnishings!! LOL

Carrie, there are no Targets in Hawaii
They have been looking into this market
The main choices of mattresses on island are Serta & Theraputic (Serta has a factory on Ohau), so if you want another brand, you will need to bring it. Matresses are sold in Hilo at the major furniture stores, and also at Costco & America's Mattress on the Kona side.Just about everything you want/need is available here. There is one thing we have learned, it is not ALWAYS available. You start to get the ebb & flow, when containers come in there may be a lot of one type of item, then that item may not be around for a couple of months, then a container of it comes in. This is not a bare shelves type thing, but an "I got this here a month ago....but I can not find it now" type thing. We are learning that this does drive a little of the "it is in stock, buy it up" type drive, but it also allows you to just re-evaluate whether you really needed the thing you were looking for!
Then you go to the beach, and nothing really matters as much!

We have bought two mattresses at Furniture land on Kinooli Street along with a lot of other furniture. We shopped all the stores and found them to have the best prices and a great selection in a price range that fit our budget. Ask for Daryl and tell him Royall and Cathie sent you. He is great to work with. We were there just yesterday for a new lamp.
