Designer for Addition/ building up vs. out - ohanamama - 04-14-2008

We are planning to add on to our home, can anyone give recommendations for designer/architect (have no idea if thats the same or not?) We have a good idea what we want but not which direction we want to go -out or up-

Speaking of which,
Has anyone heard of building up by lifting the current house up and adding underneath?

I don't know how complicated is your home improvement, but you might need a drafts person, not the architect(though architect still has to stamp it).In my case the difference was six times less.

Thanks StillHope for the clarification, - change the question can anyone give recommendations for a drafts person!?

Our current house is a very simple ranch, with not enough bedrooms for my brood!!

Lifting the building up and building underneath is possible if the house is built on post and pier. If it is on a concrete slab you'd probably be better off choosing another method. Over the years, I've done drawings for about a half dozen houses which were lifted and all of them were post and pier.

First- thanks to all who replied [Smile]

Yes, our home is on Post and Pier, we are trying to decide between an 800 sq ft "wing" or doubling our 1100 sq ft space by building underneath, we would prefer to build underneath but are afraid the cost would be much more....could you(or anyone) give us an idea if it would be reasonable to do so?

There is an example of a house being raised between Pahoa P.O. and the "new site of Cash & Carry" sign. They started 2-3 years ago, still not finished.

It's difficult for me to imagine how it could cost more to raise the house and insert a story under it than adding to the side. Of course, sometimes I do have a failure of imagination...
