Mac Nut topping on beds - hawaiideborah - 03-24-2011

Anyone know who sells mac nut shell husks for topping on garden beds? I tried Sanford and Bryson and neither do mac nut loads.
any suggestions?
I would really rather not use cinder. I hate the stuff. Gets everywhere in the house.
If not cinder and if I can't find mac nuts what do you use here in Puna to cover the new garden beds from weeds and grass? We used cedar bark back in Washington State. all I have seen here is cinder.
any suggestions on where to find mac nut shell husks now?
Thanks much for your help,
Deborah

Have you tried the local mac nut processors on the east side here? There are several.

How long does it take the mac nut hulls to break down, are we talking months, decades, or years?

THANK YOU SO MUCH.
Got ahold of him and going to get some husks delivered.
He is $60 for pick-up load delivered to HPP area.

Really appreciate the referral.

But not many months, if you're in a wet area...

We've used mac nut hulls in our compost before and have also spread it as mulch around trees. One thing to keep in mind is that wild pigs love this stuff. If you have any around and your property is not fenced, ensure that they are composted before spreading.

Curious what y'all think of the free compost from the Hilo landfill?

I use it when I can get it. Huge truck and pay for the delivery. Has worked very well for me. But none may be available for months at a time and it isn't there now so there is a huge pent up demand for it once it becomes available. I've been trying to get it all year.
