Updated USGS maps and aerial photos of Kilauea, dated 13 Aug 2007:

Still not clear which way the flow will go... Come on Flossie, put it out. Or just dump some rain with surgical precision on the north flank of the flows... =)

That certainly explains why the southern sky started glowing red around the first of the month! It looked like my neighbor had a bright red spot light in his back yard.

Heard that another quake started this morning on kileau...wow one after another - i guess pele is going to show off her splendors soon....hopefully not in any path of destruction.

Tahunatics...thanks for the work on the map. It's really helpfull when explaining things to the skeptics.

Don't think trying to dam it is going to do much good, at least based on the 1960 flow around Kapoho. See the following site for some sobering pictures.

Your example and the current eruption couldn’t be more different except they are from the same volcano.
The Kapoho eruption was from a caldera and 350-m fountains. I agree that the attempt to divert that eruption was futile, that was a massive eruption.
Our current eruption is from a narrow fisher with a slow and has a shallow out put.
I would think with the engineering improvements over the last 50 years it would be very possible to divert the flow right at the source. We only need to shove it a bit to the south. The procedure is called lava cooling and has been used in the past.
It was done in Iceland saving most of the town and the fishing village that was essential for income.

The Army had some success in 1935 and 1942 diverting Mauna loa flows from Hilo by aerial bombing.

I posted earlier about the Italians trying to divert lava on Mt. Aetna. I mentioned that their efforts only work about half the time. That means that they DO work half the time, so who knows what could be done?

Cheerfully optimistic that Madame Pele will spare all the Punatics,
