RE: Greggor V Russell - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-04-2016 Maybe just swayed by how easy it is to omit facts to make a point? A point and a fact such as: What good is it for Hawaii Island to allow farmers to grow GMO papayas, if they can't be exported to countries around the world, including all of the European Union, or sold on the shelves of local natural food stores? Because many GMO opponents can't differentiate between a roundup sprayed soybean and a non roundup sprayed papaya. Of course papaya farmers have an adequate market at the present time, but they wouldn't if GMO opponents had their way, like they do in the EU. The moon kind of surprises me sometimes. I’ll be out at night and I’ll see a nice moon, and say, “Hey, that looks good.” Then I’ll say, “Oh sh-t, I went up there one time!” Kind of surprises me. It’s like there are two Moons, you know—the one that’s usually around, and then that one. - Michael Collins, Apollo 11 astronaut RE: Greggor V Russell - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-04-2016 After all, all of Europe hasn't banned geothermal, but they have GMO products, and for good reason. I thought I would just add, that although Hawaii papaya farmers are growing a legal GMO crop under Hawaii County statutes, they still need to confront not only the ban of their product around the world which you state is "for good reason," they must also contend with the Kamali'i-Kapoho Chapter of the GMO Philosophers Society and their nighttime meetings, which include attacking the papaya fields of small farmers with machetes to hack down acres of trees. The farmers then find it necessary to respond to a few hours of criminal vigilantism with months of overtime work just to get their fields back to where they had been, with no income, as they have no papayas to sell from the destroyed crop. Along with the entire sitting Council, and Mayor Kenoi. RE: Greggor V Russell - Chunkster - 08-04-2016 quote:Yes, this sums it up. In a more perfect Puna, we would have better choices. Given what we have to pick from, Ruderman got my vote. Unlike Ilagan, he does not aspire to be a professional politician and has not sold out to power brokers. RE: Greggor V Russell - shockwave rider - 08-04-2016 quote: This is pure speculation, there has been no specific evidence of the motivation for the papaya hacking, at the time the police said it may have been a personal beef between growers OR GMO hacktivists. Generally ecosabateurs rush to claim credit for their actions. That did not happen here. RE: Greggor V Russell - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-04-2016 Generally ecosabateurs rush to claim credit for their actions Not necessarily, should they plan multiple attacks, which they did. The papaya farmer attacked indicated that it was "due to jealousy" by others for his success, as in other papaya farmers. And, there were stories about gambling debts. RE: Greggor V Russell - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-04-2016 "due to jealousy" stories about gambling debts. Do you have links to these allegations? I found a comment about jealously, but it only mentioned other farmers were jealous back when the farmer interviewed said he started to grow the Rainbow variety, long before the attacks took place, and in the same sentence the possibility of GMO activists was given equal weight. I couldn't find anything about gambling. The moon kind of surprises me sometimes. I notice these are all unanimous votes on favorable recommendations by the respective Planning Commissions. This is probably the average load of mundane work the Council deals with on any given month. I don't get the flurry or pay back spin. Note the first item is for the property next to the surf shop that was previously sabotaged by an unnamed blogger. It looks like a reasonable request, certainly good for Pahoa. |
