RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - TomK - 09-15-2017 Why does the TMT keep coming up in this thread? It is a completely different issue. RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - PaulW - 09-15-2017 I suppose they're both "elitist" activities for which some people can't see the immediate benefit to themselves, so they're against it. RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - TomK - 09-16-2017 Paul - please remember that I also have a problem with the noise the helicopters make. Elitistism is a silly argument, but so is suggesting those who have a problem with the noise might be due to "irrational exuberance". I think I'm the most rational person I know. ![]() RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - PaulW - 09-16-2017 I don't particularly want to listen to helicopters either. Or motorbikes, or cars. But if someone says they have to fly 2x or 3x as far because of some claims which (so far) have not been backed up by any proof, then I say, hey wait a minute. If there is proof they are exceeding the guidelines then I'm all for making them do something to get back within the guidelines - fly higher, vary the routes more etc. Ou est le boeuf. RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - TomK - 09-16-2017 Yes, and I've asked about flying higher and what costs would be involved in doing that, and guess what, I haven't had a response either. There are problems on both sides of the argument. RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - Eric1600 - 09-16-2017 When cruising a 5 seater will burn about 28-30 gallons an hour, but climbing costs more, probably around 35-38 gph. If you're climbing 20 minutes more per flight that can add up, plus the passengers don't get the best views. People on here can argue semantics over lies, TMT, opinions, elected density, etc. but the reality is the FAA won't do much without proof or a massive public outcry. Neither of which seems likely to happen. RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - kalakoa - 09-16-2017 flying higher and what costs would be involved I'm wondering how much of the helicopter revenue actually ends up in our County budget. Related question: how much less "tourist attraction" would the Big Island be without any helicopters at all? RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - My 2 cents - 09-16-2017 When cruising a 5 seater will burn about 28-30 gallons an hour It seems to me that relocating the heliports to a place closer to the viewing area would be a win for both sides....sigh.... RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - leilanidude - 09-16-2017 quote: No it wouldn't because the tourists want to see all they can of the beauty of Hawaii, not just a quick flight up in the air and back down. RE: HICoP Rally Saturday Sept. 9th 6-8 pm - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 09-16-2017 the tourists want to see all they can of the beauty of Hawaii, not just a quick flight Yes, think back to your Gilligan's Island Tourism 101. They set sail not for 20 minutes, but a three hour cruise. A three hour cruise. The Donner Party really wasn't that great of a party, was it? |
