RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - dmbwest - 11-23-2015 http://www.reactiongifs.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/th_popcorncat.gif RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - kalakoa - 11-23-2015 along with federal recognition would come a lot of international recognition Federal recognition would be the shortest path to land grants -- if that is the goal. RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - knieft - 11-23-2015 dakine: every telescope on the mountain (if they are wise) would be best to start nurturing a relationship with their soon to be new landlords Why not just kick em off if the land is so sacred that the TMT shouldn't be built. The rest of the world will understand... ![]() Cheers, Kirt RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - Lodestone - 11-23-2015 quote:LOL!!! +1 Pog RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - TomK - 11-23-2015 PT wrote: "The infrared noise at the summit of Mauna Kea is the sun heating the rocks during the day, doh! As for the upgrades, they are related to that." I assume from this that the rocks at the TMT site are magic rocks that don't heat up during the day, then. In fact, what you are describing is ground-layer seeing, not "infrared noise", and it's a more significant problem at the TMT site than the summit ridge. The TMT site is on a plateau meaning more thermal mass surrounding it compared to the telescopes on the ridge. For telescopes such as the CFHT, Gemini and UKIRT, ground-layer seeing extends to about 100 feet above the ground. TMT site testing demonstrated the ground-layer effect extended much higher, over 300 feet. E.g., http://sitedata.tmt.org/docs/TMT.SiteTestingFinalReport.08-04-08.pdf http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2009MNRAS.394.1121C And no, the upgrades aren't related as an upgraded infrared array will make no difference to ground-layer seeing. How could it? Adaptive optics, however, do, which is why the TMT will have such a system. PS. Hope it was good popcorn, Pog! RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - TomK - 11-23-2015 Kirt, "dakine: every telescope on the mountain (if they are wise) would be best to start nurturing a relationship with their soon to be new landlords Why not just kick em off if the land is so sacred that the TMT shouldn't be built. The rest of the world will understand... ![]() LOL. I don't think observatory staff (which includes locals and Hawaiians) will be in the mood to nurture an agreement with the protesters. The protesters have endangered lives and also caused significant problems to current observatory operations despite saying they wouldn't. The trust has been lost. RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - Guest - 11-24-2015 If the Hawaiians want a renaissance in Hawaiian culture, language, and and a revival of ancient stargazing and Polynesian navigation knowledge, the logical approach would be to make TMT the centerpiece of that movement instead of opposing it. This would elevate Hawaiian culture and Hawaiians to international prestige and people would flock here from all over the world to learn these cultural teachings and practices from Hawaiians. Whatever the motives of the protesters are, it has nothing to do with a global Hawaiian cultural renaissance. They are harming their interests and themselves by persisting in this disorganized and pointless obstructionism. --------------------------- You can't fix Samsara. RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - kalakoa - 11-24-2015 UH confirms TMT will be "the last telescope on Mauna Kea" http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/news/local-news/uh-confirms-tmt-be-last-telescope-site-mauna-kea RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - kimo wires - 11-24-2015 The Last one is always the Last until the Next. From Article: "UH’s commitment doesn’t prevent other telescope sites from being redeveloped." RE: TMT Work to Resume Says Ige! - kalakoa - 11-24-2015 doesn't prevent other telescope sites from being redeveloped Didn't Ige promise to decommission UKIRT and not re-use the site? (Yeah, sure, Ige isn't UH.) |
