RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - dan d - 09-19-2019 Thats gonna be brutal when the winter comes HPP RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - dan d - 09-19-2019 From bivn today. Last week, at a symposium on the TMT, several faculty members discussed why Hawaiians are underrepresented in the field of physics and astronomy. A senior, tenured pro-TMT physics professor publicly responded, “We know that the Kam Schools are academically unsuccessful…a student that we have here who is working on his Master’s and is a physics teacher at Kam Schools, he told me that he had to graduate people in physics that couldn’t even read.” A Hawaiian professor (and graduate of the Kamehameha Schools) in the audience told the physics professor his statement was unfounded and racist. The physics professor responded, “I don’t care.” Recordings of the confrontation were shared with the President and UH administrators. So whats the truith? How many uh incoming student grads from Kam schools do well on proficiency exams for entry into uh? Knowing the education my fairly intelegent son got. Im not surprised that a physics student could not read well. Wish i could have afforded to home school him 20 yrs ago. If no one is educated locally , tmt wh8ch will be built period, they will have to go offshore to find talented help. Maybe thats why tmt has funded 1.0 million a year to stem? Aloha HPP RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - randomq - 09-19-2019 Wow, I thought Kam Schools were supposed to be good. Looks like not much better test scores than Kea'au public HS. https://www.niche.com/k12/kamehameha-schools-hawaii-campus-keaau-hi/academics/ https://www.niche.com/k12/keaau-high-school-keaau-hi/academics/ RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - Tink - 09-19-2019 From Dan D: "It's going to be brutal when the winter comes" Exactly. My concern is Carbon monoxide poisoning from all the cars running, and the cold air mass keeping it low to the ground with cars parked so close together. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - geochem - 09-19-2019 quote: Interesting numbers at that link. Maybe, though, not a fair comparison... A more fair comparison would be how Keaau students of Hawaiian ancestry scored on SAT etc. versus students from Kam schools. A big part of success in academics is "peer culture" (attitude...) if education is not valued (or disparaged...) in the family or among your peers, then it's tough for a student to succeed. A more positive spin on the Kam scores is that Kam offers the opportunity for students of Hawaiian ancestry to start college at a level that's equal to, or slightly better than, the average preparation of students of all ethnicities that attend Keaau. Which is not to say that it is all that good, unfortunately... RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - snorkle - 09-19-2019 dan d says: Knowing the education my fairly intelegent son got. Thank you, generous Corporate investors. I hope that doesn't cut into your profits too much. Thank you, generous Corporate investors. I hope that doesn't cut into your profits too much. 1) The TMT has no profits 2) The fund is not divided among all students. It's for STEM grants and scholarships on Hawaii Island. For instance: • College scholarships totaling over $325,000 have been awarded to 83 Hawai'i Island students with financial need. http://www.maunakeaandtmt.org/get-the-facts/tmt-supporting-education/think-fund/ RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - PaulW - 09-19-2019 Interesting to see how much teachers in Hawaii sneer at financial help. They won't be getting any from me. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - kalakoa - 09-19-2019 The man alleged to be Professor Learned replied, “I’ll tell you my example of why it’s not ignorant. My example is a student who is working on his masters and is a physics teacher at Kam schools. He told me that he had to graduate people in physics who couldn’t even read.†The comments were denounced by ProtectMaunaKea as racist. Absent any epithets, how is this "racism" exactly? scholarships totaling over $325,000 have been awarded to 83 Hawai'i Island students So $3915.66 per student? That's maybe a couple of semesters at junior college, if you're getting free room and board at your parents' house. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - dan d - 09-19-2019 45 stem students 4 yr bach degree most of the 5.7 million given to stem HPP |
