Ok Tom.. I think the construction of the TMT should not begin until there is a good management plan of the summit, that ALL stakeholders agree on, in place. As it is, the history, as shared with links provided by Ironyak as well as myself, show the deficiencies are so numerous that nobody should be allowed on the summit for any reasons until it is. Ban everyone. Give the summit back to its rightful owner, the Wekiu bug!

Does that help, are you happy?

I'm just trying to make the posts more relevant to what the thread is supposed to be about. If you don't agree, then you don't agree. Happy? And by the way, the Weiku bug population is doing exceptionally well under the current management of Mauna Kea and bringing up articles that completely misstate what rent the observatories pay is also just fine if you believe in the well-known strategy of providing misinformation. But it is your right to do so.

All’s good here Tom... just think we all need to hang out with weikus more often. After all they’re the best astronomers, aren’t they?

"All’s good here Tom... just think we all need to hang out with weikus more often. After all they’re the best astronomers, aren’t they?"

Huh?

I’ve been to the summit dozens of times and it’s pristine compared to anywhere else I’ve been in hawaii, the only trash I ever saw was clearly from tourists and not observatories.

No plants grow on the summit and it barely ever rains. The Weiku bugs, according to many studies (see Dr. Jesse Eiben’s work), face no threat.

So, no clue what natural resources you are talking about - maybe the gigantic pile of basalt?

What are people expecting? Everything is relative to something. Mismanagement compared to what? Waikiki? Richardson Beach Park? Haleakala?

As long as there are any telescopes on Mauna Kea people will claim it is being mismanaged.

I’m a scientist and I deal in facts and measurements. No one has provided any. I’m not just talking about folk on punaweb, I have read the audits and I honesty don’t see any issue other than the bold print above.

Jim,

"I’ve been to the summit dozens of times and it’s pristine compared to anywhere else I’ve been in hawaii, the only trash I ever saw was clearly from tourists and not observatories."

Just so you're aware, observatory staff do regular environmental cleanups around the observatories, they have been doing this for years. If the sites aren't kept clean we get told to clean it up by the MK rangers even if the trash wasn't created by us.

But glinda is attempting to distract us from the topic, so suggest we try and stay on-track, and if anyone wants to bring up MK's environment, re-hash UH management concerns or for the umpteenth time argue about TMT's legal right to construct their observatory it's best done on other threads.
