RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - ironyak - 01-29-2020 Yeah, which is extra ironic as the environment here makes food self-sufficiency far easier than for most of the U.S. There really is no reason why many here shouldn't be getting a fair number of calories from their back yard. If you like your pandemic with a side of Fishburne, Damon, Paltrow, Winslet, and Law, the movie Contagion (2011) really nailed it and is worth a (re)watch - the bat derived virus, shots of the empty Chinese cities, the clamor for homeopathic cures, and the CDC and WHO efforts are all eerily similar to the news today (7783 confirmed cases, 170 deaths - exponential growth continues) RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - Obie - 01-30-2020 How about this reality : "There's another virus that has infected 15 million Americans across the country and killed more than 8,200 people this season alone. It's not a new pandemic -- it's influenza." RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 01-30-2020 Here’s one of the better articles I’ve seen about Wuhan Coronavirus (link below). It’s chock-ful of useful info, including which masks are most effective, and which are not. If you think Wuhan is headed to Puna you should read the entire story. I found this excerpt good advice in general, especially during flu season: As the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends: Wash your hands often, with soap and water, for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces. Don’t carry around used tissues, even if they still have some usable real estate. Stay home as much as possible when in the pathogen-spewing phase of any respiratory disease—be it coronavirus, influenza, or other. Bringing a contagious disease to work or onto the subway poses a hazard to others that can’t be totally eliminated with a mask. And, maybe the most difficult recommendation: Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Most of us touch our faces several times every hour, mindlessly, and this is often how we catch viral illnesses. Despite never being especially close to anyone sick, we self-infect by rubbing our nose or eye after touching a mucus-misted surface. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2020/01/viral-masks/605761/ RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - Punatic007 - 01-30-2020 This is probably a market manipulation and opportunity for Chinese and American pharmaceutical companies to make a few extra billion $$$. Such international reactions to knowing practically nothing about a virus that is killing at a lower rate than this years influenza. China has yet to say why it shut down major cities, again when the death rate does not equal that to the influenza. Most of the media says nothing of value over and over again. An appropriate response might be the international medical community or media coming together and putting the screws to Xi and demanding he come clean about all they know. RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - Guest - 01-30-2020 007, you seem to suggest a more cavalier approach than I would.. I think the WHO and others are right to approach a matter as this with an abundance of concern. Because of the way the world is now tied together, with air flights reaching every corner of the globe daily, a bug that might in the end have a very high mortality rate would need to be contained long before that rate was understood to avoid it actually coming to pass. I don't see any reason to get all money money money blah blah blah about it. But yes, the market will fluctuate with any nudge, be it real, 'in the wild' or manufactured. But man, to think this is a ploy to manipulate just doesn't add up. I agree the secrecy of the Chinese gov leaves them open to suspicion on any account, but if we want to find folks with nefarious intentions, we need look no further than the current US Administration. RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - kalakoa - 01-30-2020 Here's the silver lining: jobs! https://www.staradvertiser.com/2020/01/30/breaking-news/coronavirus-outbreak-could-bring-jobs-back-to-u-s-trumps-commerce-secretary-says/ Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross suggested today that the viral outbreak in China might offer an unexpected benefit for the U.S. economy: It could encourage American manufacturers in China to return to the United States. RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - 1voyager1 - 01-30-2020 I really hate to weigh in on this one, mostly due to the likelihood of being classified as a "conspiracy theorist". But, from this: https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6 8.2k people have been confirmed as being infected. Of those, 140+ have been labeled as recovered with 170 having died. Assuming the dead are not considered recovered, that is a mortality rate of over 50% by my very limited ability it calculate statistics, even though most if not all of the deaths are in China with their overtaxed medical system. I'm not sure of what the time period for it's incubation and running its course is, but that's only 300+ resolved from the 8.2k infestations so far, a very small number of people. {Numbers are rising daily] Still a lot of unknowns sofar. The graph of the infections has slowed it's rise. But, that may only be due to the total number of infections being a larger number making the rate of increase slower. We'll see what happens as the contagion progresses. Are 4 to 5k of the present 8k+ infected going to die? The total confirmed infections has crawled up by about 1k per day through the last 2 days. Prognosis' from pawns of the Chinese state to Chicken Littles in other areas, run from a few weeks to several months for this to begin coming under control, if ever. Too many questions about what is happening. We were planning a 2 week to a month's vacation in Europe in May. Plans have to be made now if we're going to do so. It is going on hold until things becomes more clear. Maybe we'll look at South America during the winter as a best case. Maybe we'll have an "End of the World Party". RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - Punatic007 - 01-30-2020 Either China accidentally let loose the virus from their Wuhan biohazard facility as they have with SARS three times in Beijing(documented) or one of China's numerous enemies let it loose. Chinese top government knows the whole story and they are letting the rest of the world find out slowly and of their own accord just how dangerous it is or is not. RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - randomq - 01-30-2020 Jeez, just go to Europe. You're just as likely to catch something at a Walmart here as an Aldi there. If you think we're better off out here in the middle of the Pacific, well, that doesn't apply until *after* travel, supply chains, and society break down, and then only if you have enough food and ammo to outlast all the ***holes. I vacationed in Mexico during the swine flu epidemic. Great views, no lines, dudes with M16s and temperature scanners at all transit hubs, it was quite an experience! RE: Wuhan Corona Virus Coming Soon? (Now Here) - ironyak - 01-30-2020 Punatic007 - So there is no chance it is a naturally occurring virus because...? As for the documented intentional and repeated release of SARS in Beijing, I'd love to read that source. voyager1 - Assuming the dead are not considered recovered, that is a mortality rate of over 50% by my very limited ability it calculate statistics Again that's not how fatality rates are calculated. You want deaths out of confirmed cases (so 171/8236 or about 2%) which is likely lower as there are many more people likely to be untested or with mild symptoms than unaccounted deaths. That number will change as those cases progress but given how quickly the virus is spreading the precautions China has taken make sense as you don't actually know the CFR for a novel virus at the outset of an epidemic. They were roundly criticized for failing to react and then concealing the extent of the SARS epidemic now they are criticized for over-reacting. Just can't please everyone. As for $$$, did you know the Chinese use the same word for crisis as for opportunity? Yes, Crisitunity! PS: Novel coronavirus declared global health emergency by WHO (largely to protect poor countries with weak health care systems) https://www.bbc.com/news/world-51318246 |
