The TMT project may carry a 75 year+ lifespan which puts it into the 21st century.

Most of us are living in the 21st century right now as of the last time I looked at my calendar. TMT lifespan could go into the 22nd century if it ever gets built.

peaceful protectors has been inspirational and educational
...I hope the Hawaiian people are better off in the 21st century

If they take advantage of the opportunities provided by the free public school system, Kam Schools, the community college, and our four year university at UH Hilo, the Hawaiian people have many opportunities for advancing their education and future job opportunities. If they’re interested in STEM, the TMT provides $1 million a year in resources and scholarships for Hawaiian and all other students on the island.

It seems that for some, the end of the 20th century meant that we should go back to the 19th century. Obviously, there is a group of people who are confused about which century we live in. I don't think these people should be making important decisions about Hawaii.

Sometimes I can be so busy I'm not sure what day of the week it is, especially when working nights, but think I have a solid understanding of what century it is.

When people ask me what Hawaii is like, I just point to the TMT debacle. It's more thorough than my old standby of "it's a backwater cesspool with nice weather".

Cesspool seems too strong for me but understand why you say that. Most people I interact with are wonderful. The ones that aren't are quite nasty but overall it's not a bad place to live. As long as you are healthy and have some money. If you don't have either of those it can be a bit of a ****hole. Unfortunately, we have a county council who are so removed from reality that things aren't going to get better soon.

Just a few years ago, protestors on Maui tried blocking the shipment of equipment for a solar telescope on Haleakal#257;. They were arrested the same night, hauled to jail, and that was the end of it. The observatory was completed & the first major images, incredible closeups of the sun were released today. They’re spectacular. It’s making news all around the world, even with Coronavirus, impeachment, major earthquakes and everything else that’s goin on.

Yesterday the Board of Ethics met to discuss law enforcement at Mauna Kea Access Road, or the lack thereof. Testimony was both for following the rule of law, and against:

On Friday, the Hawai#699;i County Board of Ethics met in Hilo where they again discussed drafting a “resolution to conduct an investigatory hearing as to why the rule of law is not being enforced at the Mauna Kea Access Road.”

Lanny Sinkin, TMT opponent asked, "Would you really prefer the arrest of hundreds of people with the potential for injuries and clogging the court system with petty misdemeanor cases, all taking place with international attention focused on our island?"

I would answer his question with a question, "Are police arresting people who broke the law?"

Then, the Grand Finale:
After hearing a full morning of testimony, the board decided to bring in special counsel to help define the parameters of the board’s jurisdiction and authority

Move along now, nothing to see here.
Oh, except you tenters on Mauna Kea Access Road. You can stay put and complain about your persecution by people who take pictures of the garbage generated around your encampment.

decided to bring in special counsel

Just put that on the tab, already $15M so what's a few more for legal fees.

The law is being enforced on the mauna. They just arrested one kia'i for throwing a glass bottle of urine at another kia'i. I hope they counted the ounces spilled and are initiating an environmental cleanup.

randomq - I knew there had been an arrest up there but had not seen it being reported anywhere. Is there now something available online?
