I get it now eric. You said "into" Hilo, but you were thinking about towards Hilo.
Thanks for that big map Tom. Too bad they leave off some major roads that will help locate those lines (like Waikoloa road on the west side).

It looks to me like the dividing line runs through Kea'au. Not sure where the coastal point is. Do you know?

No, I don't know, I'm sure I could figure it out give a little more time to research things. Not sure I'll have time to do that though.

I'm not surprised roads and highways are left off, I think that map is based on terrain and topography and likely geological history, but it's not my work so can't tell for sure.

The boundary at the coast is right at Haena (Shipman Beach). Here's a map; the beige color and everything to the southeast is Kilauea flows, and the blue/green to the northwest of that is Mauna Loa (with a little bit of Mauna Kea flows at the top; the MK/ML line is pretty much right at the Wailuku River):

Basically, the ahupuaa of Keaau including the main Puna subdivisions is all one big eruption from Kilauea, which is the northernmost. The only exception is a triangular piece consisting of Keaau town itself and the the farmland to the west and north (mostly mac nuts), which is Mauna Loa (you can sort of see it from the ag roads; North Road and South Road form the boundaries). Given this odd "appendage" on Keaau, and that Olaa is landlocked, I think most of what's now Keaau was originally part of Olaa ahupuaa and was joined to Keaau after it became useless due to the eruption (which was only ~250-400 years ago).

Yeah, I just saw the new map. Kinda right back where we started from. But, maybe the new storms on the way looks like it will bring plenty rain! Probably slow it down at least. The good news is, it really looks like it's filling up the cracks before it starts building up and heading back down towards the ocean again. Should be interesting how long this flow stretches out.
