RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - Frank - 03-08-2017 quote:true enough...at the same time, Eric has a killer idea RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - kalakoa - 03-08-2017 Eric has a killer idea Especially if the bikeways are separate: besides not mixing traffic, a dedicated bikeway would be cheaper (assuming right-of-way) than widening a road, no need to design for multi-ton vehicles... Entirely possible funding could be secured if it was "for the tourists". RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - Kapoho Joe - 03-08-2017 Great idea Eric! Too bad it's about 50 years ahead of it's time. Hawaii County cannot even figure out how to effectively move automobiles around, let alone pedestrians or bicyclists. RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 03-08-2017 Hawaii could be a huge biking destination if they had the vision to improve some of the main highways and had connecting roads. ... Entirely possible funding could be secured if it was "for the tourists". ... Great idea Eric! Too bad it's about 50 years ahead of it's time. Here's another idea for a bike trail, one that combines some of the previous comments. What about designating, improving, and connecting the ancient Ala Kahakai “Kings” Trail, which runs from Puna to Kohala? It's a part of Hawaiian history, it traverses a beautiful part of the island near the coast line, and it's generally sunny throughout most of it's length. Funding could come from multiple sources: * designated tourist taxes as it would draw out of state bike tours * Kam Schools or OHA as a way to promote Hawaiian history at places of historical significance along the way * the county which could use it as the backbone for other bike trails linking the island. In 50 years. You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven. RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - kalakoa - 03-08-2017 designating, improving, and connecting the ancient Ala Kahakai "Kings" Trail, which runs from Puna to Kohala? I believe there are some efforts towards preserving some of these trails, so the idea is not without precedent. Opposition usually comes from those who now live next to it and don't want the "crime/noise/trash" that the trail would obviously bring "near them". RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 03-08-2017 Opposition usually comes from those who now live next to it Yes, because the first thing that comes to mind when I think of a bike rider is "crime/noise/trash." Tag line for a "Hawaii Bike & Star Trek" movie pitch: "The imagined needs of the few, outweigh the genuine needs of the many." You could never convince a monkey to give you a banana by promising him limitless bananas after death in monkey heaven. RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - Eric1600 - 03-09-2017 quote: Yes that would be a good idea too. However leveraging existing easements is much easier for the county. Ideally they could also build a bike/pedestrian only trail along beach road from Hilo to Pahoa which would be a great commuter trail. There is a group called PATH HAWAII who are working on getting trails and lanes built on the island. They can always use more volunteers and ideas: https://pathhawaii.org/about-path/ RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - kalakoa - 03-09-2017 leveraging existing easements is much easier for the county All trails which existed prior to 1892 are automatically property of the State; easements are merely "permission". RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - Guest - 03-20-2017 Looks like the county may be on the hook for this former Pahoa police officers defense. http://www.westhawaiitoday.com/news/local-news/county-pay-ex-officer-s-defense-fatal-crash Is Brian De lima a cheap or low cost attorney? RE: Cop said sun was in his eyes, as he kills tourist - bananahead - 03-21-2017 BIKE TRAIL??? NO Way! we live on a 4K sq mile island with the pop of an ave city, ie Santa Rosa CA. not enough local demand or $$$ to maintain it, let alone build it... if the county makes a 'special' road for bicyclists, the county will be liable for maintaining the road for road bikes... no F-N way! IMO the old experienced biker going uphill was prob cutting corners, the cop was blinded by the 6:25AM sun and maybe cutting corners and they collided?? the key is... where the contact between bike and car too place??, in middle of lane or on shoulder??? , the only CRIMINAL PART so far I see, was the cop 'fixing' the scene to make it look like he rolled up on a 'hit and run'..... ****************************************************************** save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha |
