Alaska airlines just announced nonstop service from Kona to Sacramento (one of Southwests startup cities to Hawaii). This could get interesting!!

Hawaiian Airlines also flies to Sacramento.
With Southwest (possibly?) making inroads into the inter-island market, management at Hawaiian Air must jump a foot or two every time their news alerts go off.

As a retired airline employee I can fly on United for $85.00 but it's space available.So this is a great time for me but I still fly Delta if the United flight looks anywhere near full.
one of my pet peaves on the united flights ...anytime I do fly the United flight it seems half full of .......employees ....the paying passengers getting a short shrift - grin

You get what you pay for.In this age of inventory control I found myself sitting at the gate a lot watching an airplane leave without out me.It's a bit inconvenient when the airline only has 1 flight a day.I once tried for 3 days in a row to get on the United nonstop.
That's why I usually just pay full fare.

how I miss Continental ...however ...the Southwest model makes sense using Hilo as a hub then doing short inter island hops and outbound through HNL.
no full loads out and into or out of Hilo required ....seat pitch of 32 one of the best in the industry for economy ....no change fees a big plus for those of us who have "lives" on both ends of the route
been waiting for them for a long time = dont think I am alone in that regard ....competition never hurts

flying to Hawai'i was interesting because I haven't flown since pre-9/11, so I was completely new to all the new restrictions they have. Flying used to be a lot more fun, let me say.

I cant afford the Hilo-LAX flights so I make the long haul from Kona. Also don’t like the red-eyes either which seems to be the only option from Hilo.

Back when ITO was the major tourist destination, the airline i worked for, Western, flew LAX-ITO-HNL.
We could drop off passengers in ITO but CAB rules prevented us from carrying passengers ITO-HNL unless they boarded in LAX.
The return was HNL-ITO-LAX.Same thing no interisland.
Western's flights also went from HNL-SJC-OAK.The next day it went HNL-OAK-SJC.
Our LAX-HNL flights had to originate in LAS or MSP.

My wife and I have flown the United non stop to Lax a few times in the last couple of months.It's half full at best.
Most of the very best vacation rentals and tourist destinations were destroyed by the eruption.Only about 1/3 of VNP is open.VIS on Mauna Kea closed.
No flowing lava.
