You realize glyphosate isn't the subject of this bill right, EW?

The bill targets restricted use pesticides only, which glyphosate is not.

The article just says pesticides and chemicals, very vague. No one has provided a link to the actual bill yet, I tried but couldn't find it. Maybe someone else knows how to find it so that we can all be better informed of what we are talking about. I'm not doubting you Jim, I'd just like to see more.

I've been saying that people should be notified so that they have the option to choose. If it isn't as easy as I think it is, maybe the actual bill will shed some light on this as well, i.e., what is the definition of notification?

And finally, if it isn't about "unrestricted use" Roundup, and it's actually about restricted use pesticides, which I would assume are much stronger and less safe hence the need for restrictions, why are there 8 pages of comments on the safety of Roundup in argument against this bill?

.

What is the value of notification where the area cannot be avoided?

Probably minimal.

Will people not drive to Hilo when the shoulders are being sprayed?

It's their choice.

Will school close for the day to avoid exposing the children?

No, however parents and teachers may have their own choices to make, which opens up a whole new but directly related discussion. The other part of the bill (according to the article) deals with buffer zones around schools.

Great questions M2C,

I’d assume it’s because it feels good (and is easy/cost free) to get on the proverbial white horse and ride into battle against the evils of Monsatan and his poisonous round up.

Basically the same mentality as mobs that would lynch African Americans or ‘witches’ in the past.

In a world where you have so little power or voice it feels rewarding to be a part of something bigger than you and feel like you made a difference.

Plus there is nothing to sacrifce when you can afford organic food and boycotting big corporations like Monsanto - I mean it’s not like you have to give up your iPhone or something like that - this is a virtually risk and sacrifice free crusade !

An article in the Guardian 4/30/18 about pesticides/roundup

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/apr/30/fda-weedkiller-glyphosate-in-food-internal-emails

With the new FDA deregulation and cutbacks, I have my doubts we will ever see the final report.

RE: Hawaii residents want pesticide alert!! - Obie - 04-30-2018

I have a problem with this timeline !

Ford built the Pinto, so all of their vehicles are flaming death traps ?
THE TIMELINE
RoundUp Glyphosate Litigation Update
1974
Monsato registers a patent for the exclusive use of glyphosate, which is marketed as RoundUp.

1984
Monsanto, along with other chemical companies who made the nerve gas Agent Orange agree to pay $180 million to veterans alleging serious health problems in order to resolve years of litigation.

RE: Hawaii residents want pesticide alert!! - My 2 cents - 05-01-2018

Thanks for the link Rainyjim. Clearly the Roundup discussion has nothing to do with this bill. As to the notification part, the requirement is for the company doing the spraying to post signs. Kinda like "wet paint" or "slippery floor", no big deal. I don't see how this costs the State anything because it's the company's requirement. The article states: "The State Department of Agriculture strongly opposes it, stating pesticides used are fully vetted and approved by the Environmental Protection Agency and consistently alerting the public about application would require the hiring of additional staff which would burn through state funds."

Either the DOA is throwing out BS arguments or it's shoddy reporting. I do recognize that the "monitoring" of this could be an expense, but that isn't what the article says.

RE: Hawaii residents want pesticide alert!! - rainyjim - 05-01-2018

M2C,

There is another requirement that the HDOA has to compile a databases for when all the RUP were sprayed and make it publicly available. Time is money, so no doubt they would have to hire someone(s) new or divert employee(s) from current job(s).

RE: Hawaii residents want pesticide alert!! - My 2 cents - 05-01-2018

I suppose we could get into a discussion about using some of the people who are currently being paid to do very little.....

I still say the cost is minimal. In today's digital world compiling databases is pretty quick and easy. Also, how many farms fit the criteria (10lbs or 10 gallons sprayed) and how often? Making it publicly available is just one more click of the mouse. I think "burn through state funds" is a bit of an exaggeration.
