RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - rainyjim - 07-16-2019 Also a separate thread for pronouns? RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - TomK - 07-16-2019 glinda has revealed his identity on older threads. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - knieft - 07-16-2019 Yeah, but, you know, one can reveal stuff on threads but pronouns? Maybe a separate thread... Cheers, Kirt RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - rainyjim - 07-16-2019 Not sure how on topic this is, but... To me, the telescopes are beautiful. The telescopes are more than just beautiful, they stand as symbols of the highest ideals and most accomplished feats of my culture. Further, I will never forget lying on my back staring at the stars when a low thrumming began and after a while a gigantic laser shot out of one of the Keck observatories - blew my mind. I later learned why the Keck’s have lasers, which I won’t bother to explain in this post, but I will say the experience was fantastic. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - knieft - 07-16-2019 quote: Good golly, rainyjim, but I agree. Cheers, Kirt RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - TomK - 07-16-2019 Thank you, Jim. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - LazyLehua - 07-17-2019 I really hope TMT can proceed soon and those that have had to leave their jobs on Mauna Kea can return. I would guess it is a good strategic move that they left. All of the telescopes have sensitive environments that must be maintained. I am sure the governor of Hawaii and President Trump will be bombarded by not only NASA, Univ Hilo and Smithsonian but all the other County’s that have millions of dollars of equipment that are now at jeopardy. This move may expedite the process of opening the road. You can protest all you want, but sitting on a road is not a peaceful protest. On the other side, I have been inside many of the facilities on Mauna Kea. Everyone that I have interacted with are humbled with the fact that they have the privilege to work in such a special place and make advancements in science not only for Hawaii, but for the world. The facilities are clean and I never saw any trash around the facilities. My heart goes out to those who work on Mauna Kea. Stacey Living the life in Cali and Hawai‘i RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - dan d - 07-17-2019 Its not unusual for the telescopes to be unmaned. Happens all the time when it blows 90 up there. As long as the dewers are filled with liquid nitrogen and such, they can last several days without refilling. Almost all viewing and data are acessed remotely, from waimea or hilo HPP RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - MarkP - 07-17-2019 quote: +2 RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - ironyak - 07-17-2019 rainyjim - I’ve been to the summit dozens of times and it’s pristine compared to anywhere else I’ve been in hawaii, the only trash I ever saw was clearly from tourists and not observatories. So multiple audits by the state and a 2007 EIS by NASA showing significant, substantial and adverse impacts means nothing because YOU personally have not seen it? And then you plaster this single point perspective as being scientific? There must be a great many things in the universe you don't believe exist because you have not directly witnessed them. The situation is the result of the state being unable to create and then actually follow their own regulations, with the various agencies playing hot potato to pass along the responsibility. How is this a surprise for anyone who has had to interact with local government? The current "who gets up the mountain" is just the latest evidence of the state being unable to manage its way out of a paper bag, much less the morass it's created. |
