RE: Blog/Bloggers - Necessary? - Blakeyboy1 - 04-09-2009 I think this explains in in a way all can understand ;-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zSP8xm_gaK4 -Blake http://www.theboysgreatescape.blogspot.com/ RE: Blog/Bloggers - Necessary? - Devany - 04-10-2009 I have not jumped in on this thread much, but Damon, I don't see your blog so much as a diary, it seems to me you offer a lot of news on it, not just yaking about everything you do. It maybe the news you want to share, but it isn't only about you. I don't consider my blog a diary either, but it is composed of things I am passionate about that I believe others might enjoy reading and seeing. While many events I post about are focused on others, some like the cooking posts are certainly from my own heart. It involves me because it is from my own perspective. There is lots more to my life than what I post and plenty of it is private. I have another very good friend (also a professional writer)who has a public blog and a private blog that only friends and family can read, hers is most certainly a diary and will be a terrific life history for her 5 year old daughter one day. I feel honored that she invited me to read it. It is one of my favorite blogs. The great thing about Blogs is you can read 'em or NOT. Nobody is forcing anyone to go to these sites, even though millions of people do every day. Blogging takes a huge amount of time and effort, especially if you are including photos and video. Nobody would do it if they did not believe that they were doing something for others. Sure, there may be a few people who are trying to cash in on their blogs by advertising, but what they get is a drop in the bucket if you consider an hourly wage. Even Damon, who is obviously prolific at blogging has TWO "day jobs". I am a published writer, and I get a nice sum for the articles I write, but I give 10X more content away than I get paid for because I share it on my blog. I do it because I love to share, photograph and write. I would do it even if I wasn't getting the traffic I am getting. I would do it if I only had 5 readers. I do it because I love doing it. Clearly, there are a multitude of different kinds of blogs out there and that is one of the reasons they are so popular. There is something for almost everyone as Kathy said. And for those who don't want to read blogs... that is fine too of course. That is my two cents. quote: Aloha au i Hawai`i, devany www.myhawaiianhome.blogspot.com www.eastbaypotters.blogspot.com RE: Blog/Bloggers - Necessary? - Guest - 05-06-2009 If Rupert Murdoch has it his way, the major newspapers will begin charging to access their newspapers online w/in the next 12 months: http://damontucker.com/2009/05/06/rupert-murdoch-wants-to-start-charging-for-newspaper-website-access/ Got Blogger? --------- Damon Tucker's Blog FBI Blogs RE: Blog/Bloggers - Necessary? - Devany - 05-06-2009 Many of them already do charge for online access, including our very own local paper, which is a sad excuse for a local paper with so many stories coming from AP. It seems like ads would make online access much more profitable, but then my favorite paper is still online for free. I would still pay to get access to the NY Times online if I had to. I already have to pay for premium access to the archives. quote: Aloha au i Hawai`i, devany www.myhawaiianhome.blogspot.com www.eastbaypotters.blogspot.com RE: Blog/Bloggers - Necessary? - Guest - 05-06-2009 Well the local paper gives you "some" of the content for free... however if Rupert Murdoch has it his way... you will only see headlines in the Major Papers and then have to subscribe via a fee to view the rest of the content. I would hardly call any paper on the Big Island a "Major Paper" though. Anyone want to drop a dime on the new design for the FBI Blogs? ![]() --------- Damon Tucker's Blog FBI Blogs RE: Blog/Bloggers - Necessary? - allngood - 05-06-2009 I agree Devany, advertising is the key. The newspaper business has been evolving even before the Internet. At one time, most major cities had 2 or more papers. Distribution and printing cost ended many of those. With the Internet, a branded paper like the NY Times can expand its viewers 10 fold and more. Their cost are considerably lower if there is no printing or distribution. Smaller markets may need the subscription charges. Here is a good video with Eric Schmidt, CEO Google speaking to Newspaper Association of America on this subject and more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=orAJ-YD9FhA RE: Blog/Bloggers - Necessary? - Devany - 05-07-2009 Thanks allngood... that was a great speech.
