RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - eightfingers2.0 - 12-21-2021 T Too M Much T Talk RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - Chas - 02-09-2022 A good opinion piece by Rich Matsuda, chief of Operations and External Relations at the W. M. Keck Observatory. "Let’s Brave The Possibilities On Mauna Kea" https://www.civilbeat.org/?p=1479133&utm_source=Civil+Beat+Master+List&utm_campaign=38987052f2-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2022_02_08_09_55&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_51c2dd3cf3-38987052f2-402027462&mc_cid=38987052f2&mc_eid=bb753109d3 RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - randomq - 02-09-2022 Lots of okole kissing; think it makes a difference? The very notion that someone has a perpetual right to a place because "they were there first" is profoundly racist. And in this case, considering the history of Tahitians conquering and enslaving the original Marquesan Hawaiians, it wouldn't even apply. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - TomK - 02-10-2022 I put a lot of weight behind Rich Matsuda's opinion. There's a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes that most people don't know about and Rich is leading that effort to make both sides find a compromise. He's highly respected by those on both sides of the argument and I hope he's given time to help find a solution. This situation is not as simple as many think it is and there are genuine arguments on both sides. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - AaronM - 02-10-2022 After being deafened by the battle cry of Follow The Science, it's very strange to see science losing vis a vis the TMT. I've no idea what you mean by this. Rich's letter is about astronomy on Maunakea and how we can all go forward. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - kalakoa - 02-10-2022 strange to see science losing Social sciences are no less "science" than engineering or astronomy. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - randomq - 02-10-2022 TomK, what do you consider genuine arguments from the anti-TMT crowd? RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - AaronM - 02-10-2022 The nimbly complaints that you claim are masquerading as social science arguments hold no water. Just like the summit. I don't see why I should answer that question because you've made it specific to the TMT. Rich Masuda's letter is about astronomy on the Big Island and Hawaii in general. One of the big questions now is whether astronomy continues on Mauna Kea with or without the TMT. I don't know what "nimbly complaints" are, but it would be nice if you could mention who you are replying to. |
