I was the first one in the topic to say don't post that you own guns here if you have also shared info such that you could be located, because guns are one of the prime valuables targeted by the thieves (who will hit you while you're not home).
That was not a threat. It was an attempt to let you see you are making yourself vulnerable to OTHER people who are not honest.
Another point that came up in recent crime meetings here is that the Facebook stalking crime is here on island. People are advised to disable the setting that allows Facebook to post their GPS coordinates in photos taken of your property or of you when you are gone.
Craigslist is also a way people can try to gain access and case your property.
The police would tell you the same thing you're hearing here. Thieves are akamai enough to use the internet, Twitter, Facebook, message boards, ads, and police scanners to monitor the police response in an area. Not paranoia, life in 2014.

There is also great gentle nature here, walking in and demanding all bend to your beliefs and feelings in a harsh way will be met with some pushback. People move here for what it is, yes there are things that may need to change, but all the anger won't get you far here. Can't force this place to become The place you left behind.

That's the whole point, I don't live in fear. Why? Because I know my rights and I am prepared to use them if I have to.
This isn't about me and my house hold, I'm good to go.
This is about puna, HPP specifically, that don't like that there's crime, but do nothing about it, and so, you've lost my sympathy. I can't feel bad of you do nothing about it, and I surely don't feel bad if you damn me for doing it.

Other than material items like my temperpedic which would cost much more to replace than ship , I'll be bringing PATIENCE, a good attitude, an open mind, controlled expectations, a clear conscience, some liquid cash flow and knowing that I really know nothing.
In reading this thread, it would appear that in the short time you have lived here (wasn't June 3rd your arrival date?), that you have lost some of these items you brought with you.

There is no silver bullet that will solve the crime problem. You're right, there are a few things that might reduce the overall crime rate, but truth is, there will still be burglaries even with street lights and guns. It's the luck of the draw. I've lived here 15 years without a problem, and that's pretty good odds if you ask me.
