Yes they do.
Those making over 250,000 a year do.
Have a nice day.

What don't you understand about proportionality?
I am glad a relative few fly in on their private jets to Kona this time of year.
So what does that really mean for us here?

Until now, I would have never believed that peaceful protesters here in the 'land of the free' could ever be beaten up, maced, peppered sprayed, dragged by the hair, arrested and killed just for exercising our right to speak freely and assemble peacefully, until I saw it with my very own eyes.
Why would you not believe this? I saw or knew of all those things being done in the USA in the late 60's-early 70's.

Have we forgotten history?

The Vietnam-Cambodia protests were the last events of civil unrest that were really widespread and engaged in by the ordinary citizen. And those protests were handled with violence. The thing is, "we" thought that the brutality exposed changed things forever and couldn't happen here again.

What we do if a protest here on island turned ugly? Would we rise up? Does it effect things that the Baby Boomer numbers are now on the old and tired side of the spectrum? Would someone here write a song like Ohio? (I hope so.)

Still a great song for pondering the times, For What It's Worth, Smothers Brothers TV show, 1967 (written 1966). (yes, I know it was not written about war protests, but it was an important and prophetic song.)

I remember seeing young people hit with billy clubs by LA County Sheriffs for no good reason. Maybe if you are younger you don't have such memories of the cops acting like thugs at peaceful protests?

Peaceful protests can also turn ugly and costly, with assaults, unsafe fire-hazards with propane heaters in tents and overdose deaths (this happened to a 22-year old in Vancouver, unfortunately). There is a large cost to long, drawn-out occupations, a cost that is borne by all citizens through property taxes or rents (indirectly).

Not that one negates the other but the costs should be kept in mind as part of the question of whether this is the best or most effective method to bring attention to the issues and needed change... Laura

Well, we used to march, but now we got the rheumatiz so we occupy..

Seriously, if I can contribute by helping with my property taxes, good. TPTB want everyone complacent and visible dissent is one thing that could prod them.

I'm glad that Hawaii is showing spirit.
East side weather is not the most conducive though.

I have been a registered Libertarian for over 30 years. Mainly along the ideas expressed below by Ron Paul:

"What if the American people woke up and understood that the official reasons for going to war are almost always based on lies and promoted by war propaganda in order to serve special interests?

What if we as a nation came to realize that the quest for empire eventually destroys all great nations?

What if the American people learned the truth, that our foreign policy has nothing to do with national security, that it never changes from one administration to the next?

What if war in preparation for war is a racket serving the special interests?"

The U.S. Annexed Hawaii with the same mind-set.

The Arrogance of the established American mind set is discouraging. The fact that a true anti-imperialist individual such as Ron Paul is probably unelectable because he is dismissed as a Kook is discouraging. But it is the closest glimmer of hope that I have seen in my lifetime.
Marching around the world with our military, making it safe to sell Pepsi, is the recipe for eminent demise.

I agree with your assessment. Our OH (Occupy Hilo) would be better served to choose wisely what they purchase. The buy local attitude is much more useful than protesting with their starbucks and i-phone.

Fight fire with fire. In this case, money is the fire. So spend wisely, and realize than every purchase (yes even of a new I-phone) is a yes or no vote for wall street's bad behavior. In the case of our Hawaii moneylenders, choose BOH or FHB or any of the other regional banks, CU's or S&L's, although yes, they are on WS, more of the money stays in Hawaii through jobs they create, and buildings they buy or rent for their businesses.

The extra money needed as Aki said to clean up and deal with the OWS'ers is only coming from all of us. The big corporations will be able to right off the expenses they incur and take yet another item as a tax deduction.

There are so many choices we make everyday that affect WS much more than standing in front of a brokerage firm in Hilo.

How is not buying an iPhone going to help anything? Apple is one of the last great American companies left, they revolutionize everything they touch. You would not even be posting here if it was not for Apple. What is wrong with a company making a profit by making great products that consumers want? You know that a majority of companies shares are owned by regular individuals. Wall street is not the problem, business is not the problem, real capitalism is not the problem. THE GOVERNMENT IS THE PROBLEM, THE FEDERAL RESERVE IS THE PROBLEM. You are encouraging people to support banks who are most assuredly gambling with 0% interest loans from the Federal reserve. Don't you realize your "money" is worthless? WAKE UP.

Occupy vs Tea Party

RE: Attention!!! - dwedeking - 12-04-2011

Wall Street does not equal real capitalism. Government is just the paid employees of the multinational corporations.

Supporting local small businesses vs those that off shore everything is really the only power we have left. As much as possible I buy locally vs from those companies that will just take that money off-island (and in some cases out of the US). And as much as possible I believe in supporting the "under the table" cottage industries.
