Yup, the spoken word means nothing anymore. Inflame the masses is now the key. For a transplanted mainland "haole" to move to Hawaii, claim its culture as theirs and then call parts of it a "ghetto" and some of its people "trailer trash" is just okie dokey.

Continue to justify the unjustifiable. No wonder Hawaii, and America is where we are right now.

IMO, rural ghetto is not an inaccurate description for much of Puna and to be fair he did not call any of its people trailer trash.  Rather one step away from it, which also seems to be true in some cases.

Obviously you hold a grudge with him that colors your perception. He's not a politiican, just a lowly poster on PunaWeb.

RE: The Bicker Board - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 10-05-2026

a "ghetto" and some of its people "trailer trash" is just okie dokey.

When I first arrived in Hawaii I found a house on Maui down a mile + rutted base course road, overlooking 60 acres of cattle pasture and then the North Pacific Ocean.  I thought it was paradise. It was.  When my sister who lived in a house on a 4000 sq ft lot in Dallas with a pool came to visit she thought it was a hellish nightmare.  No AC, no pavement, no services, no shopping, she thought I was crazy.

She could walk out her back door and go for a swim.  I had to walk 10 minutes to cliffs on the ocean, let myself down a zig zag path with rope holds, then walk across a lava outcrop jutting into the ocean, with a deep, wide salt water pool.  Mostly on days when the waves were calm.  There was an in between time when the tide was right, the waves were not too rough, and we could hurry out to the pool before the next set arrived.  When it washed over the outcropping we dove under the water and the pool became effervescent, bubbly, it tingled like nothing else I’ve ever experienced.  My sister’s hot tub (next to her pool) couldn’t do that.

It’s almost 40 years later and I still wouldn’t trade with her.  Who cares what someone else thinks?  They can have it.

Obviously, you missed or forgot this gem. I also think you have been misinformed on the origins and meaning of the term "ghetto."

I'm not the one with a grudge. Just merely pointing out the words spoken, how absurd those words are as well as the racist and bigoted conotations those words bring.

Ponder this question: If I had bought a million-dollar estate in South Kohala, I'd be considered a rich retired lawyer. But if I bought a one-million-dollar cookie cutter spec home in HPP, or as we did, built our retirement home on 9 acres of land in the Acres, I live in a Hawaii Style Ghetto?

And being clear here, while I too am not a politician, as well as just a lowly poster on PunaWeb, I am not the one who holds the grudge here.

Could not have said it any better that this HOTPE!

RE: The Bicker Board - Durian Fiend - 10-05-2026

The origin of "ghetto" is irrelevant.  Whether or not the word can be construed as racist depends on the context. None of our Puna subdivisions are comprised mostly of one ethnicity or another, so how you can see this use as racist baffles me. What minority is MyManao insulting?

Yeah, you'd be a well to do person living in a mostly impoverished, underserved neighborhood.  And as those locations go, it's a darned good place for someone in your socioeconomic class to live IMO.
Puna is a desirable place for a poor person to live too.

RE: The Bicker Board - HiloJulie - 10-06-2026

Let's see what Merriam Webster says:

GHETTO Definition & Meaning - Merriam-Webster

As Merriam points out - which is pretty spot on to say the least:

In the U.S., the adjective ghetto is strongly associated with racist attitudes toward the people who live in underprivileged city districts. Although the use of ghetto by and among residents of such districts may be considered neutral, its use by outsiders—particularly to disparage someone or something as being typical of such a place or person—is understood to be offensive.

There is absolutely no mistake on how the OP used the word and in the context that it was used that make claiming its origin as irrelevant. There was clearly no mistake being made or confusion thereof in the meaning of and context of the use of "ghetto" by the OP. The insulted race was anyone who lives in HPP, the Acres or by extension, most of Puna.

Claiming otherwise is as disingenuous as one can get.

RE: The Bicker Board - MyManao - 10-06-2026

The origin of "ghetto" is irrelevant...

From… https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghetto

A ghetto is a part of a city where people of a particular race, religion and/or minority group live closely together and apart from other people, especially as a result of political, social, legal, religious, environmental, or economic pressure. Ghettos are often known for being more impoverished than other areas of the city. Versions of such restricted areas have been found across the world, each with their own names, classifications, and groupings of people.

As an example: I am sure Jules could not afford to live in Hawaii if it wasn’t for the relatively low cost of its ghettos in the southern side of the island of Hawaii.

And while Jules clutches her faux pearls in feigned disgust (as she so often does) with our simple, honest, words, yes her trashy use of the English language and endless demands of her own superiority above all others does suggest a certain familiarity with trailer parks.

Go ahead Jules post your made up disgust, show us again how right we all are about you.

A lot of Puna, and Kau are ghettos. It is a fact. They were built to be ghettos, and they remain ghettos. Take any metric you want, the mean, the average, the whatever income level, education level, availability of jobs, the limited goals its citizens have, how many single parents there are, the amount of health concerns, number of people with mental health conditions, percentage of the population on welfare, amount of crime.. it don’t matter. In every single one Puna is below, and in many case far below, the same social economic standards found in most other communities in Hawaii. Because it is cheap, because that’s where those that can’t afford to live elsewhere go, because it's substandard, because it's a ghetto. And, for those that live here, thank god it is, otherwise most of them could not afford to live in Hawaii, at all.

I am not saying it is not a nice ghetto. Sheesh as far as ghettos go it’s paradise. But it's still a ghetto. And all your clutching, and feigning, and otherwise showing everyone over and over who you really are, aint gonna change it one bit.

You prove my point, yet once again. First, a very big assumption on what you are basically saying is my "net worth." We easily afforded everything we spent on building our retirement home in the Acres very easily, which includes a solar power system that was over 50K. And sorry, HOTPE, but we do have central air.

In no way am I claiming any superiority over others, which, ironically, if you ever read what the sheer nonsense it is that you quite often write, is exactly what you're doing. In your mind, retired husband and wife lawyers who spent over 40 years in the profession would never consider living in the "ghettos" of the Acres. The only reason they would do that is if they were low life wage earners. You confuse needs over wants. Specifically, we moved to the Acres for the solitude, and being quite frank, to get away from people who think exactly like you. We could have easily picked a South Kohala estate, but after living in Newport Beach, CA, where we owned our condominium for years, our goal was to get as far away from that lifestyle as possible. What we found in the Acres was exactly just that. And not a single person like you within miles.

You are simply classifying people by race and socio-economic status. Being financially responsible is one thing, being poor is another. In your mind, it's apparent that you think you're the superior one, and that those less than you on a socio-economic scale must and only can live in the "ghettos" of the Acres. Or HPP. Or Ainaloa. Or somewhere in Puna. You have expressed this sentiment for several years in the mostly garbage you write.

At any event, I am sorry but your simple honest words, most often delivered with a very poor imitation of the native Hawaiian Pidgin language, coupled with what at times sounds like a 1980's 14-year-old California Valley girl and peppered with yet another poor imitation of Dr. Cornel West just don't ring true in any measurement.

Oh, one more thing. Do you think that every PunaWeb poster who lives in HPPP, Orchidland, Ainoloa, the Acres, etc., could not afford to live in Hawaii if it wasn’t for the relatively low cost of its ghettos in the southern side of the island of Hawaii?

One more thing. Are you also then putting Rob in that class? HOTPE? ChunksterK? The Tangy Tang Tang? Randomq? DF? Are they also familiar with trailer parks as well?

Or, just me? I'd also say that I have shown everyone else how right I am and what everyone else thinks about you.

That's not racism, it's simply a perceived insult. Have you noticed no one has seconded your outrage about either MyManao's or kalianna's word choices?

Rob:  Assume the best and ask questions.

Julie:  Assume the worst and make accusations.

That's certainly true for me.
