RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - sistersue - 07-14-2014 Back to the recent robberies subject: does anyone know if these older folks had any protection dogs? When I had a scary thing happen here a few years ago the police officers who came to my house told me I should have a big dog. Since I love dogs I was delighted to adopt a big ol' Rottweiler whom has been my burglar alarm and friend for a long time now. I wonder if these people had had dogs around if they still would have been robbed? What do you think? RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-14-2014 I think when a dog barks a thief goes somewhere quieter. I have two small dogs and I've seen sketchy looking characters coming up my driveway several times. As soon as the dogs started barking they threw it in reverse and headed down the road. RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - deserteagle50ae - 07-14-2014 This is a true story. A while back I was home one day waiting for my new TV to be delivered so I left my driveway gate open. Awhile later my dobies started barking so I thought that was the delivery guy. Turns out these two Hare Krishna's walked onto my property and my four dobies had them up against my garage wall when I came out of the house. So yes, dogs are good to have around. And I've not seen any more Hare Krishna's around my street since then. RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-14-2014 I take it your Dobies weren't interested in the free vegetarian meal the Krishna's usually offer? RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - deserteagle50ae - 07-14-2014 Guess not, haha. RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - alaskyn66 - 07-14-2014 The right kind and temperament of dog is worth its weight in gold. In Any rural area. When in Rome.. Do as the Romans do.... RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - Guest - 07-14-2014 I think a dog and a gate would be the first choices in home defense. Also, I love Rotties <3 They love their owners and they eat everyone else RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - birdmove - 07-14-2014 Or get yourself a few Guinea Hens. My daughter has some of these. Anyone comes onto your property, you will know. As I said in my earlier post here....a gun owner is not obligated to shoot the fool that smashes his way into your house. I held the bad guy at gunpoint, telling him to back his butt up against my wall, or I would shoot him. Having a .357 magnum revolver loaded, in the hands of someone who has total confidence in himself and his gun handling, pointed at your head, tends to make you pause and remember the little things in life that you enjoy. Now, if he would have turned around and run out, I would have let him go and called the police. But, if he would have attacked me, in my own home, then there would have been another ending to this story. I let the guy live because he didn't attack me after smashing his way into my home about 11:00 at night. He waited for the police to come and get him. He did try to approach me several times as we were waiting for the lawmen to arrive, and I had to remind him that I would shoot him, if he didn't back up. As to the laws in Hawaii. It's great that we have laws here. There are laws everywhere. The one about a homeowner must run out of his home and give his house over to some looney.....well, there are many people who will not do that ...ever. That doesn't mean that you have to shoot and kill an intruder. I am very glad that I didn't have to shoot that guy. I wouldn't enjoy having to live through that myself. But, that choice was in his court. He chose not to attack me in my own home. And, making that choice gave him a second chance to clean up his life. I hope he did that. Jon in Keaau/HPP RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - deserteagle50ae - 07-14-2014 Well said Birdmove. RE: Another Home Invasion in HPP - csgray - 07-14-2014 One of my daughters' best friends growing up was the daughter of a community policing officer. He said that people who break into homes generally avoid places with dogs, even little dogs, because the they are such good alarm systems and also unpredictable. His take on it was that the bad guys just move on to a place with no dogs if they hear barking. Two dogs is better, because even some tweaker who is dumb enough to try to get around one dog doesn't usually want a second dog coming around behind them. I do know that when I am the only one home, our dogs make sure there is one of them between me and the gate and another between the stairs to the house and me. They view it as their responsibility to guard me and the house when my husband is off the property. They guard the yard well too, which the surveyors who thought it would be easier to cut through our lot, instead of bushwhacking their way back through the jungle of the lot they were surveying learned. I had to go rescue them from the corner my dogs had them backed into, they were afraid to try to climb back over the fence and expose their rear ends to two pissed off snapping canines. My dogs bark as needed, and I know what the different tones in their barks mean. The bark for a cat or chicken crossing the road is totally different from the strange person walking up to the gate bark. I would never consider living in rural Puna without a dog for security, they are an excellent defense and warning system, and great companions too. Carol |
