Mahalo Rob for providing this forum for the Puna Community and for HPP property owners.

Things do get out of hand on the HPP threads and I appreciate you monitoring them as a reminder to us to be respectful of one another.

Aloha [Smile]

close to 20 Thousand ( watch the next census) living in HPP without basic representation or control

Then that's 20,000 people getting what they deserve, and the rest of us need not concern ourselves with the choices they have made.

Too bad, really.

I finally agree with you on something. Everybody here bought land at a discount and if they really want better infrastructure, everyone needs to pay to get it done.$5,000 each from everyone in HPP.

Let's get ur done.

I bought on a dead end street off of a main road. Checked the traffic, barking dogs and roosters. Also bought with houses and both sides. People along the road mow and fill pot holes as needed.

RE: HPP road fees - EightFingers - 04-11-2020

I was thinking the road fee should $350/month, not $350 per year.

HOWEVER,

We need to get someone that we can TRUST to run this association.

As to the 20,000 who live here, how many go to the meetings, serve on committees or otherwise volunteer? When people don’t care, they pretty much shouldn’t expect anything.

First of all I have never heard of property in Puna being "sold at a discount". Please explain.

I have heard the argument that land in Puna is cheap and one should not expect things like road standards and maintenance. However I will point out that all or most of the county roads receiving standards and maintenance existed before statehood and were "cheap land" at the time and unpaved until such time as the county formed and road standards, paving and maintenance were applied.

The fact is that 40% of the roads in the County of Hawaii are "substandard" and were all, at the time of their subdivision approvals from the County Board of Supervisors, in violation of subdivision standards in effect at the time. The lack of maintenance and substandard roads are a creation of the County of Hawaii and the County of Hawaii is solely responsible.

Just my humble opinion.

The lack of maintenance and substandard roads are a creation of the County of Hawaii and the County of Hawaii is solely responsible.

Which is exactly why subdivision infighting is vitally important: it distracts everyone from noticing County's role in creating and maintaining the problem.

the road fee should $350/month, not $350 per year

Because people living on paved County-maintained roads are paying $4200/year in property taxes?

Slice it any way you want, we're never getting the services we pay for -- nor will County relinquish control. After all, Puna problems are good justification for tax increases.

I sincerely prefer this conversation! These are all great points. Just imagine if all the subdivisions would come together and realize the mountains we could move together by addressing the State and County and the responsibilities they hold .

"cheap land"

Rob,

In 1998 I looked at property and ended up in Vacationland because it was residential.

It was much more expensive than anything in other neighborhoods.

If you buy an AG lot in HPP you get what you bought.

My Condo in Hilo the HOA fee is $660.00 a month and it's worth it !

You want good roads either step up or quit bitching.

It was a tax mining scheme and it happened all over !!!

Since you're telling people to quit bitching, please define what you mean by "step up"?

$5,000 each from everyone in HPP.

Pave the roads. If you don't want to face the fact that it's going to require something like that then quit complaining.
