Plane was in testing.

737 Max etops the apu has to remain running the entire flight.Other larger etops planes like the 757 and 767 have a hydraulic motor generator for backup electrical.

RE: Southwest Airlines - announcement coming.. - Bullwinkle - 02-17-2019

either way an apu unit restart in flight is a FAA requirement for etops approval ....cant restart them above 10000 feet per the boeing 737 max operations manual

RE: Southwest Airlines - announcement coming.. - Obie - 02-17-2019

The 10,000 ft limitation was for the classic 737s.It's to prevent draining the battery which would be the last thing you would want in an electrical emergency.

This is the ops manual info on the Max:

The AlliedSignal APU has a 41,000ft start capability and incorporates a starter/generator, thus eliminating a DC starter and clutch. In practice this means that it can be started either by battery or AC transfer bus 1 (the classics are battery start only). It has an educter oil cooling system and therefore has no need for a cooling fan. It is rated at 90KVA up to 31,000ft and 66KVA up to 41,000ft. The Garrett and Sundstrand APUs are only rated to 55KVA.

the tracking looked like a classic engine out, apu start and loss of pressure drill including a practice diversion to ITO all pretty standard

aint armchair speculation fun

2 more round trips in the bag this weekend alone ....they will be here soon

"the tracking looked like a classic engine out, apu start and loss of pressure drill including a practice diversion to ITO all pretty standard"

For engine out they wouldn't do an emergency descent. They would get out the single engine drift down chart and slowly descend. Then they apply climb power until they are back at altitude and then start the drift down over.

They did an emergency descent to 10,000 ft and then stayed there for the last 2 1/2 hours of the flight.

Here a video on how to not land a 737Max:

RE: Southwest Airlines - announcement coming.. - Bullwinkle - 02-18-2019

for a simulated engine out with the apu providing bleed air and electrical the altitude limit is 10k feet

the track log would be consistent with a apu simulation

they did keep up a pretty good airspeed ...maybe just a electrical / bleed air drill - who knows what the FAA is asking them to practice / demonstrate ....worst case scenarios always in the mix

anyway cant wait for them to start flying ....missing the good old days when we had Aloha 99 dollar specials and those 1000 dollar 10 one way books on that half way half price airline passes were the bomb

half way half price airline passes were the bomb

Handy flying tip:
Do not share the advice above with fellow travelers at the airport, on the plane, or until after you get into the car at your destination. With the door closed and windows rolled up.
