RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - Wao nahele kane - 05-06-2018 I guess the odd seismic activity above Kilauea is what had me scratching my head. This during deflation of the summit and while the magma level in the crater is lowering. I'm wondering what would have likewise caused the seismic activity to simultaneously move outward, further off the coast, also. So, either a whole lot of magma has suddenly found all these differing routes throughout Puna, limiting flow to the previous main caldera OR the deflation is the result of recession of the whole system. That would decompress the magma as the hydraulic head load is decreased, resulting in gas expansion in the magma, descending deeper into the magma sources, inducing seismic activity that moves from the middle of the magma column down deeper, more offshore. The upper seismic activity, collapsing tubes. With the magma down deeper expelling a great deal more gas as it's decompressed through the system column being subjected to a lessor load. Difficult to describe but not difficult to understand. Easing the top off a shaken pop bottle similar to easing/lowering the head load within the lava column, results in gas expansion in the column and release. RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - DanielP - 05-06-2018 not a chance. Have another bong hit RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - macuu222 - 05-06-2018 Wondering if Leilani is going to be the new Pu o oo ? RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - Wao nahele kane - 05-06-2018 Daniel, Never touch the stuff. Nice try though. RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - DanielP - 05-06-2018 Macuu's question has more merit RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - terracore - 05-06-2018 Should this be titled, Pu'u O'o deflation? RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - TomK - 05-06-2018 "The rise and fall of Kilauea". It could make a best-selling book. RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - EightFingers - 05-06-2018 So what happened right after the eruptions of ‘55? Did everything go quiet? Lot of stuff about the eruption itself, but nothing about the “after”. It looks like it lasted three months and then “stopped”, but I wonder what went on the year(s) after. RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - kapaauguy - 05-06-2018 quote:Ive been thinking the same thing. I guess we see if Pu`u O`o refills? If not and Leilani is the new primary vent, lower Puna will be changed significantly. aloha RE: Pu'u O'o inflation - ironyak - 05-06-2018 EightFingers - So what happened right after the eruptions of ‘55? Did everything go quiet? Lot of stuff about the eruption itself, but nothing about the “after”. https://www.soest.hawaii.edu/GG/HCV/kil-hist.html Looks like a few quiet years then back to back large eruptions at the summit and Kapoho. Tina Neal of HVO was talking about how we may be entering a fundamentally new phase of the volcano's development - history shows us some possibilities but not any clear predictions it seems. |
