RE: Control your EFFING DOGS! - JWFITZ - 04-27-2008

Likewise, thought I'd weigh in again a last time this morning lest my posts get misread or partially read and I get accused of being some Aryan Dog Poisoning Concentration Camp running screwball. Far from it. I'm a pretty passionate sort for sure and I get to writing--look out. I can be a bit of a firehose at times.

I'm just some guy who'd love to have a full nights sleep on a regular basis and not have a raided garden. I feel sorry for a lot of people, and a lot of dogs too. I'm very empathetic of any group that hasn't been given a fair shake, and tend to be an advocate for anyone who's life is made a hassle by someone else inconsiderateness.

As for the garden thing, it seems cured now, but it took a fair investment to get there.

The Aryan Dog Poisoning Fellow lives up the street, actually, come to think of it. Joking, kinda.

Lastly, I've got to say that in the time I've spent in Hawaii, dogs aside, it has been a completely wonderful experience and I haven't recieved any attitude from anyone anywhere that wouldn't or couldn't be recieved as pure aloha. There are problems here for sure, but I'm here by choice and wouldn't change a thing, ultimately, if it meant any of it would be lost.

I kind of hate to resurrect this topic, but I met someone whose story really touched me, and I thought of this topic. For sake of anonymity I have to keep the graphic details generic, but suffice to say this is the general story I was told.

This person, who seemed very nice and sincere to me, a peaceful sort, called in a complaint for nonstop barking, at night, per the current ordinance.

The neighbors (transplants from the mainland, so this is not a locals vs newbies situation) began harassment that involved all night boombox, taking gun shots at persons, verbal abuse, death and dismemberment threats, garbage thrown on the property, and much much more. The police are not helping, letters have been written to all levels of government, without resolution or relief, and it's moving on to attorneys and lawsuit. Which is why I can't be more specific.

I said earlier in this topic that you have to be ready for a war when you complain about some people's dogs, and this is a perfect example. This person tried to act within legal rights, and now life is hell. And every moment must be in readiness to document some bizarre act or threat. Does he or she stay, or move? Either way is a great loss.

It makes me so sad that people can't take responsibility for the noise they create.
Would it in any way have been better to resort to using guns? I can't imagine how. More likely, somebody would be dead.

The point of my post is not to stir up indignation but to encourage you guys to think carefully before you engage in even polite complaint mode with your neighbors here. At least gauge their mentality to see if they're reasonable people before you act.

This is why I said before I would never speak to a neighbor about the dog problem unless you really know them. Speaking to them about the problem only points the finger at you later on when the police are responding to a noise complaint or the dog disappears. I know its common courtesy but here were common decency doesn't apply for many people courtesy will only get you in trouble. I know I spoke to my neighbor at 1 am to 2 am a couple times and REALLY wish I wouldn't have. Now if the police show up they will assume its me and if the dog doesn't come home they will assume its me. So no matter who gets upset enough to call the police or kill their dog I will get blamed.

Over here on Oahu, the city just released $37,500 for a Neuter program.

The City & County of Honolulu funds the Neuter Now program, while the Hawaiian Humane Society manages the program at no cost to the City or taxpayers

Couldn't the County of Hawaii do the same?

I'm amazed I didn't hear about this earlier:

...Sunday's attack (on Maui) left Kyle with a couple of minor bite marks on an arm and hand, the dachshund with multiple wounds, a blood-stained carpet and veterinary bills exceeding $1,500.....

RE: Control your EFFING DOGS! - missydog1 - 05-03-2008

that's a scary story. There's no question in my mind that too many dog owners are irresponsible -- what to do about it that would turn things around I'm not so sure. I don't think they should have released the dog ... I think one bite should be the limit.

But then, I had a beloved cat killed by two dogs whose owners had already been ordered to keep them restrained because they attacked other animals, and they'd gotten loose. (This was in California, not Hawai'i.) So I don't have a lot of faith that the owner who didn't control the animal to begin with will be good about complying ...

i just read about it in today's star bulletin. i'm surprised that the guy ONLY dragged the dog into the shed.

RE: Control your EFFING DOGS! - Guest - 05-09-2008

So I have moved back.... and less then 72 hours back on this island... I take my child for a walk through the neighborhood that my ohana has lived in for more then 80 years and a fricking puppy comes chasing us down!!!! (it was a mean puppy though and could have done damage)

My son is on his ground level "tractor" and before I even have a chance to protect my son.... this puppy comes from out of nowhere and just about prounces on my son while he is riding his toy.

I have been off island for awhile now and don't know which properties have dogs and don't now.....

I'm really amazed I didn't punt this puppy into never land.... as it got right up to my son's face before I could scare him off...

This is not just random dog's.... it was a dog that happens to live close to the Schools here in Pahoa!

Sorry to bring this thread back to life.....but once again.... I almost sent a dog to never never land because that dog attempted to bite my defenseless child and it was off leash and off their property.

Yes... Happy to be home.... Pissed as hell that something I have only been writing about online has now preminisced itself to something I have directly now had to deal with.

And NO .... I'm not gonna fricking try to reason with the neighbor after years of attempts.

Please keep us posted on the neighbor reaction. I have never had any luck.

RE: Control your EFFING DOGS! - mgeary - 05-10-2008

Timing is everything. I hadn't checked this thread in awhile, kind of gave up on it, but I had the contents in the back of my head. Then I was following the other thread, "Living in Hawaii with no Rights", or whatever it's called, and finally posted some thoughts about hate crimes and hate speech and the general lack of aloha I've been sensing in a couple of different areas.

Then this thread pops back up to the surface, and I took the opportunity to re-read back at least until Fitz's last post of 4/27. I don't know if an apology is in order, Fitz, but your last post made me feel better about things. I never really thought you were an ADPCC screwball, but you did contribute to the discussion in a way that, let's just say, didn't sparkle with aloha. I'm guilty of that, occasionally, myself, we all have a bad day. Your most recent post puts your point of view in a way that I certainly identify with and appreciate. Thank you for clarifying.

Dogs can be a life-threatening menace, dogs can be a pain in the arse, nobody likes random dogpiles in their front yard, and everybody likes a good night's sleep. I hadn't realized there was such a problem in Puna until this thread came along. I certainly don't have any answers, but my thought would be to pursue the avenue of making the Animal Control people, and the police if necessary, do their jobs. I think that's what I'm going to do, if I have to, when I get there. Of course, I reserve the right to protect myself and my family however I see fit if there's a clear and present, immediate danger.

Thanks, all. Feeling a little more aloha. Maybe I just had a bad day myself, and had my ugly glasses on yesterday. Today I must have found my happy glasses.

Aloha! ;-)
