RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - TomK - 09-01-2016 randomq asked: "Any work on that star & exoplanet the Russians detected radio noise from?" No work on it from Mauna Kea and the signal isn't from extraterrestrials. There are a lot of checks that should be done when spurious signals like this are detected and it seems they weren't done this time. You might find this true story amusing: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/may/05/microwave-oven-caused-mystery-signal-plaguing-radio-telescope-for-17-years RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - Guest - 09-01-2016 I'll buy Ted and Gypsy's dinner and beers if they promise to ask a few REAL WORLD questions on the 16th. RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - TomK - 09-01-2016 Not a discovery, but a cool image captured by the CFHT Cloudcam tonight. It's looking east so the bright lights are from Hilo and are reflected off higher level clouds left over from Madeline. http://imgur.com/Hpby7sR RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - PaulW - 09-01-2016 Is MK staying bunkered down for Lester or has the all-clear been given? RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - TomK - 09-01-2016 We're operating tonight although conditions aren't great. Can't speak for the other observatories other than the JCMT which is also open and observing tonight. We'll be making the call regarding Lester on Friday evening I think. I haven't got quite that far in planning right now but given the latest forecast I'm not shutting things down right now. Other observatories will make their own decisions of course. RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - Guest - 09-01-2016 Cannot think of something more adventure than riding out typhoon inside a dome @ 4200. RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - TomK - 09-02-2016 "Is MK staying bunkered down for Lester or has the all-clear been given?" None of the observatories are shut down but Lester is dragging in an awful lot of moisture from the tropics, so don't think much observing will be going on for a night or three. RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - Guest - 09-02-2016 so ZERO "discoveries" to blog about tonight RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - PaulW - 09-02-2016 http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/volcanowatch/archive/2000/00_06_01.html The Next Eruption of Mauna Kea The observatories may end up discovering that! Is it so that the observatories would have to (hopefully only temporarily) stop work if/when MK started rumbling? RE: Discoveries by the telescopes on Mauna Kea - Guest - 09-02-2016 LOL. I rest my case. |
