I’ve felt ashamed, not for following my passion and pursuing my dreams, but that some Hawaiian people criticized telescopes and TMT for absurd reasons. When I look at the government entities and institutions in Hawaii, the one that stands above (figuratively & literally) all others is the astronomy community. It works. It functions. It contributes. It puts Hawaii on the international stage with discoveries made here on a regular basis.
Yet, some believe the solution for the plight of Hawaiians is to tear down and dismantle an organization in Hawaii that operates and performs at its best?
That sounds counter productive.

The next time you are stopped by the County of Hawaii Police, remember to ask for a menu of their ala cart arrest options:
Authorities said those arrested all elected to get cited with a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of a government operation, rather than being booked at the Hilo police station.
Those who were arrested were bused from the area, and given the option to be cited and released or transported to Hilo to face charges. The 34 who were cited are due in court on Sept. 20.

Just got back from Kona today and went through the protest area. Cars were parked both sides of the road for at least a mile. Police were parked at various places along the road, but were mostly in their cars. I did see one cop at the intersection talking to a couple people. People were friendly, smiling and giving us shakas.
We had to slow down to around 30mph, but we didn’t mind as we were able to get a good look at the goings on.

Watching the unrest grow.. does anyone think there’s an end to this that has everyone go home and the TMT just go about their business?

Since 72% of Native Hawaiians support the TMT, shouldn’t the petition be in favor of building the observatory?

I would sign that one. Weren't the original Hawaiians explorers? When they arrived, I doubt they said "No more exploring, that's it. Let's protect the high spot on the island."
Oh, and also pass on opportunities for education for our children.
True desecration is all the wild pigs, goats and sheep up there rooting up the mauna and destroying the flora.
