RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-18-2019 Hawaiian woman offers her perspective on Mauna Kea, the observatories, and TMT: I’ve felt ashamed, not for following my passion and pursuing my dreams, but that some Hawaiian people criticized telescopes and TMT for absurd reasons. Many discussed unrelated topics, such as the sovereign status of the Hawaiian kingdom, or chose to ignore facts and pursue a false narrative of genocide, commercialized profit, militant weaponry, pollution and desecration. https://www.civilbeat.org/2019/07/tmt-means-progress-for-hawaiis-future/ RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - kalakoa - 07-18-2019 absurd reasons. Many discussed unrelated topics Standard operating procedure for any protest: attach yourself to the biggest, most visible thing so as to garner the most attention. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - glinda - 07-18-2019 Sadly, that's true for most Hawaii government actions any more... And one of the strongest arguments in support of the Hawaiian’s plight. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-18-2019 one of the strongest arguments in support of the Hawaiian’s plight. When I look at the government entities and institutions in Hawaii, the one that stands above (figuratively & literally) all others is the astronomy community. It works. It functions. It contributes. It puts Hawaii on the international stage with discoveries made here on a regular basis. Yet, some believe the solution for the plight of Hawaiians is to tear down and dismantle an organization in Hawaii that operates and performs at its best? That sounds counter productive. RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - reni - 07-18-2019 Puna Councilman questions County's pocketbook being involved in ongoing expense of stand off. http://bigislandnow.com/2019/07/18/puna-councilman-emergency-proclamation-may-lead-to-increased-conflict-on-maunakea/ "The land lays almost entirely in state jurisdiction. Mauna Kea Access Road is a county-paved and -maintained road on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands property. Mauna Kea is not the county’s jurisdiction, yet the county of Hawai‘i has been told to bear the costs of arrests, prosecution and manpower." “With our own administration quiet, I’m speaking up. This is our county. Too many decisions are being made by off-island politicians and business interests...." “I have asked for fiscal tracking of all expenses incurred by our county and an expense report Aug. 6, 2019. I urge the other counties to inquire as well what costs they’ve accumulated so far." RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-18-2019 The next time you are stopped by the County of Hawaii Police, remember to ask for a menu of their ala cart arrest options: Authorities said those arrested all elected to get cited with a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of a government operation, rather than being booked at the Hilo police station. Those who were arrested were bused from the area, and given the option to be cited and released or transported to Hilo to face charges. The 34 who were cited are due in court on Sept. 20. https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2019/07/17/new-victory-protesters-police-back-away-mauna-kea-second-straight-day/ RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - EightFingers - 07-18-2019 Just got back from Kona today and went through the protest area. Cars were parked both sides of the road for at least a mile. Police were parked at various places along the road, but were mostly in their cars. I did see one cop at the intersection talking to a couple people. People were friendly, smiling and giving us shakas. We had to slow down to around 30mph, but we didn’t mind as we were able to get a good look at the goings on. Puna: Our roosters crow first RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - glinda - 07-18-2019 Watching the unrest grow.. does anyone think there’s an end to this that has everyone go home and the TMT just go about their business? ETA: For anyone interested in signing a petition supporting the Hawaiian’s efforts regarding the TMT there is a change.org petition at: http://chng.it/DNtLsLySt4 RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-18-2019 signing a petition supporting the Hawaiian’s efforts regarding the TMT Since 72% of Native Hawaiians support the TMT, shouldn’t the petition be in favor of building the observatory? RE: TMT construction begins Monday 15 July - lisa - 07-18-2019 I would sign that one. Weren't the original Hawaiians explorers? When they arrived, I doubt they said "No more exploring, that's it. Let's protect the high spot on the island." Oh, and also pass on opportunities for education for our children. True desecration is all the wild pigs, goats and sheep up there rooting up the mauna and destroying the flora. |
