RE: Access to Mauna Kea - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-27-2019 It's not just Hawaiians and environmentalists that the state and county have pissed off. Many are pissed off by the whole shebang, the state and county and road sitting Hawaiians and certain environmentalists. Some think it would be a good idea if the Union Of Concerned Scientists change their name to Union of Misinformed Scientists, judging by their comments about the TMT & Mauna Kea. RE: Access to Mauna Kea - TomK - 08-27-2019 HOTPE, I haven't seen a statement on behalf of the UCS regarding Mauna Kea, but if you are aware of one, could you provide a link? RE: Access to Mauna Kea - kalakoa - 08-27-2019 What's it going to take for "everyone" to get so "pissed off" that something actually gets done about "all the problems"? RE: Access to Mauna Kea - randomq - 08-27-2019 We just need a Kamehameha type to come in and re-unify all the islands. By extreme brute force, not coup, so it will be considered valid. Whoever disagrees gets marched off a sea cliff. RE: Access to Mauna Kea - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-27-2019 statement on behalf of UCS I don’t believe UCS has a coordinated stance on the TMT, but the post below by one of their members has been cited and linked repeatedly on social networks as if it’s from the entire organization: The second thing I know is that Maunakea is Hawaiian territory and we, astronomy, do not have consent for TMT on Maunakea. I think this has been clear for more than a decade through court cases and protests, but the idea of consent came to a head on July 18, 2019 when Elders were arrested by police for trying to protect the mountain. This was a violent moment, but not a new moment. https://blog.ucsusa.org/science-blogger/maunakea-and-the-need-to-indigenize-astronomy RE: Access to Mauna Kea - TomK - 08-27-2019 Yep, I'm aware of that one. It's by Hilding Neilson and the general astronomical community are more than aware of his views, whether they are correct or not. Thanks though. The same thing happened with Greenpeace when a rather outrageously misinformed article by one of their members was seen as the general view of the organization. RE: Access to Mauna Kea - Obie - 08-28-2019 Perhaps the plan is to just wait and let the weather this winter do the job of nudging the protesters off the mountain.I can't imagine living up there during the winter. Another avenue the state could explore is blocking Saddle road on both sides and allow traffic to come down the mountain but allow no one up.After a few weeks of not being able to provide food and water and being able to service the porta johns could result in the protesters either giving up or starving to death. Problem solved ! RE: Access to Mauna Kea - kalakoa - 08-28-2019 State is obviously too busy soliciting names for Fissure 8. RE: Access to Mauna Kea - TomK - 08-28-2019 Pass the blame https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2019/08/29/gov-ige-explains-why-he-couldnt-grant-mayor-kims-wish-delaying-tmt-construction/ It's the state's fault, no it isn't it's the county's fault, OK, hold on, ultimately it'll be the TMT's fault. "“The ones who will decide whether it’s continue to try or leave is not the state, but the authorities of the Thirty Meter Telescope,” said Kim." PS. Seriously? Significant progress? ""We certainly have made significant progress. Mayor has had a couple of meetings. I've had meetings with many in our community who care about our community and care about the project," said Ige." RE: Access to Mauna Kea - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 08-28-2019 PS. Seriously? Significant progress? If the TMT could be built with its optics & 30 meter mirror facing the County building in Hilo, I doubt with even that degree of magnification they’d discover any signs of activity. Maybe though, they’d get the first picture of a black hole for tax dollars. |
